Want GWB for life?

So I hear an effort is underway to repeal the 22nd Amendment, which limits presidents to two terms in office. The resolution was introduced by Maryland Democrat Rep. Steny Hoyer and co-sponsored by Van Nuys congressman Howard Berman. It also earned the support of James Sensenbrenner, the conservative Republican chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. Bet the other side would go ballistic. Hmm. The 22nd Amendment repeal, if it passes and is approved by the states however, would not go into effect until after the Bush presidency, making him ineligible for multiple consecutive terms.

Aw, bummer.

How do the pro-death forces "know" there is no possibility of progress, healing, miracles? They seem to think they know. They seem to love the phrases they bandy about: "vegetative state," "brain dead," "liquefied cortex."

Why did Andrea change her mind about aborting her baby on that winter day last December?

"Because of the Crosses, and the people at the gate." Andrea went on to clarify, "... Suddenly I asked myself, what am I doing in here? ..I knew I had to leave! I did not want to have one of those Crosses out there be there for my baby."

Here is a really wonderful story of Sage Elizabeth, who was "rescued" from Tiller's abortion mill when she was 12-weeks-old.

What do Sen. Rick Santorum (R., Pa.) and rapper Nick Cannon have in common?

Senator Rick Santorum (R., Pa.)'s C-SPAN Miracle."

Back in 1998, as he spoke in a near-empty Senate chamber talking about partial-birth abortion (even though he knew President Clinton was going to veto the prohibition bill he was arguing for) a young man was watching television with his girlfriend, flipping through the channels, and hit C-SPAN. It was a wasted night so far as the senator knew - that is, until he heard from the couple:

"Senator, on Thursday night I was watching television with my girlfriend. We were flipping through the channels and we saw you standing there on the floor of the United States Senate with a picture of a baby next to you. And so we listened for a while and the more we listened the more we got interested in what you were saying. After a while I looked down at my girlfriend, and she had tears running down her face. And I asked her what was wrong, and she looked up at me and said, 'I'm pregnant, and tomorrow I was going to have an abortion, and I wasn't going to tell you, but I'm not going to have an abortion now."

The couple have a child today and are grateful to the Pennsylvania senator for their child.

Can I Live?

On an online message board off Cannon's website one woman wrote, "I have spent years trying to make the same point you made in minutes.Your video and song are SO powerful. I have seen all the abortion videos and pictures, had my heart ripped up and thrown back at me. NOTHING has ever moved me like your video. I've watched it 3 times and still cry. I want you to know that the 2nd time I watched it, I brought my 16 year old daughter into the room with me to see it too. I have never been able to put into words what it was like to go through with a pregnancy her father did not want. He left me, and I had her at 19. It hasnt all been easy, but she is my beautiful precious daughter, and I am so grateful. I hope your video reaches every woman out there who is contemplating this, and thinks they have no choice."

As KLo wrote this article, Nick Cannon will never know how many late-night debates or changes of heart he'll prompt when someone is surfing and runs into "Can I Live?" but at least one mother is already grateful to Nick Cannon. With a scheduled abortion a few days away, she called the Rachel's Vineyard help hotline (877-HOPE-4-ME). After many conversations, a counselor sent her a link to the video. According to Theresa Burke, founder of the abortion-healing group, the mother's reaction was, "Well, now I know I can't do it." It's a tough road, but this mother, relays Burke, saw "the gift and value of human life" this "survivor" sings about in "Can I Live?" Instead of the abortion, she went for an ultrasound, and saw her twins.

If the frame fits...

Katha Politt talks about the pro-choice movement's most recent attempt to redefine itself and abortion with the linguist techniques of George Lakoff:

"In "The Foreign Language of Choice," posted on AlterNet, Lakoff writes that he doesn't like "choice"--too consumerist. In fact, he doesn't even like "abortion"--too negative. He wants to "reparse" abortion in four ways. Dems should talk about it as an aspect of personal freedom from government interference, and as the regrettable outcome of right-wing opposition to sex ed and contraception. They should reclaim "life" by talking about the fact that "the United States has the highest rate of infant mortality in the industrialized world," thanks to poverty and lack of healthcare, which are the fault of conservatives, "who have been killing babies--real babies...[who] have been born and who people want and love" and damaging their health through anti-environmental policies that put toxins in mother's milk. Finally, they should talk about the thousands of women each year who become pregnant from rape: "Should the federal government force a woman to bear the child of her rapist?"

George Lakoff is really smart and eager to help, so why does this way of talking about "medical operations to end a pregnancy" make me want to reparse myself to a desert island? Is it the sly reference to rape victims coerced by the "federal government," object of much red-state loathing, when surely he knows that the relevant policies--on giving out emergency contraception in ERs for example, or using Medicaid funds for abortions--are set at the state level, like most abortion laws? Is it the singling out of rape victims as uniquely deserving, which tacitly accepts the conservative "frame" of abortion as a way for sluts to evade the wages of sin? In fact, most American voters who favor abortion restrictions already make an exception for rape. The ones who don't--the 11 percent who would ban abortion completely--have already framed it to their satisfaction: Yes, the government should force rape victims to carry to term because the "child" should not be murdered for its father's crime.
[..]

Hillary Clinton talks about abortion as sorrow, while calling on Republicans to join her in passing the Prevention First Act promoting contraception and, with Patty Murray, going after acting FDA head Lester Crawford for failing to make emergency contraception available over the counter. Howard Dean says he wants the "pro-life" vote, and before you know it anti-choice Democrats get the nod to run for the Senate--Bob Casey in Pennsylvania and Jim Langevin in Rhode Island (who has since bowed out). NARAL, or, as it has reframed itself, NARAL Pro-choice America, placed an ad in The Weekly Standard calling for the right to "Please, Help Us Prevent Abortion" through better access to birth control. Responding to a poll showing that only 22 percent of Americans say abortion should be "generally available," NARAL is emphasizing "freedom and responsibility"--birth control, sex ed, emergency contraception. Responsibility is surely a bedrock American value. The trouble is, as William Saletan pointed out in a perceptive column on Slate, it means different things to different people. It can mean moral autonomy and free will, or it can mean suffering the consequences, accepting punishment. To NARAL "freedom and responsibility" means knowing your body and using contraception, with EC or abortion as unmentioned backup; to an anti-choicer, the same words might mean abstinence, with childbirth as the price of getting carried away."

RE: Banning the MAP on Wisconsin college campuses

When was the last time you saw birth control advocates protest at an abortion clinic? For many of them, abortion is just plan B if plan A fails. The true reason for advocacy of the abortion pill, a.k.a. emergency contraception, is to facilitate unbridled and guiltless sexual exploration. Let's just admit it, rather than hiding behind the euphemistic and transparent veneer of "reproductive rights."

Terri's autopsy: The blind spot
Whatever the results of the Medical Examiner's (ME's) report may indicate about the condition of Terri Schiavo at the time of her death, we know from the mainstream media's hyped reporting that America's leading news outlets and reporters are mindlessly ill-informed, wilfully blind, thoroughly unprincipled, and miserably unschooled in the basic principles of medicine, the scientific method and statistics.

The news reports that the liberal media spewed-out on the Schiavo autopsy reveal little or nothing about whether Terri was braindead, blind, and incapable of feeling pleasure or pain. But they certainly yield insights into the sorry intellectual, moral and politicized state of the liberal media as well as the armies of medical and legal experts who prostitute themselves by shamelessly dispensing legally unsound and medically unsupported misinformation and disinformation without adequately informing themselves on the facts of the case.

Planned Parenthood's Margaret Sanger sought to end physical, mental "defectives"
Sanger reviews the remedies for dealing with a nation half filled with "morons" and finds them all wanting. She reserves her greatest scorn, of course, for the traditional. The Catholic Church's claim that even deformed children have souls, she argues, has had "the practical effect of making this world a vale of tears." To "open-minded" individuals - presumably, like herself- such orthodoxy appears "crude and cruel" and a "menace to civilization."

Traditional philanthropy, if anything, is crueler still. "Organized charity," writes Sanger, "itself is the symptom of a malignant social disease." By keeping so many "defectives, delinquents and dependents" alive and breeding, charity at some point becomes an injustice for the self-supporting citizen and a "positive injury to the future of the race." Indeed, students of Sanger could not have been surprised by the massive progressive indifference to the torture and death of Terri Schiavo. The seed of that indifference has been deeply planted.

Sanger's American Birth Control League and its allies had enormous influence in their day. In 1927, in a now notorious case known as Buck v. Bell, the U.S. Supreme Court accepted the state of Virginia's ruling that Carrie Buck and her infant daughter were mentally defective and thus deserving of forced sterilization.

Abortion would still be legal after Roe

A new study by the Life Legal Defense Fund, a nonprofit legal organization based in Ohio indicates overturning the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision would not impact the legality of abortion in most states.

The study shows that less than 10% of the population would be affected.

The comprehensive study analyzed the current status of state laws on abortion and what would happen if Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton- the cases that nullified state bans on abortion - were overturned.

The study concludes that just seven states - Arkansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Dakota and Wisconsin - would have enforceable laws on the books that would ban abortion.

For the other states, new legislation would have to be adopted or significant state case law precedent would have to be overcome, the study concluded.

The group points to U.S. Census Bureau 2003 statistics that reveal the states with effective abortion prohibitions constitute just 9.7% of the U.S. population. Based on current abortion rates, even if Roe fell today, more than a million abortions per year are projected to be performed legally.

I just picked up this story about a 16-year-old girl who buried her baby near her school. The girl is believed to have suffered a self-induced miscarriage.

In late February this year, a 23-year-old undergraduate placed her premature baby in a plastic bag and threw her into the common rubbish chute from the 18th floor of a block of flats. In November 2004, another teenager flung her stillborn baby from her 8th floor flat. And these are just a handful of horror stories we read about everyday everywhere in the world. Am I the only one who find this trend disturbing?

CMA doctors spoke out in opposition to AMA's stance on abortion and conscience.Christian Medical Association executive director, Dr. Gene Rudd, an OBGYN, said the key issue in the pharmacy debate is "the fundamental freedom to follow the dictates of one's conscience and of the teachings of one's religious faith."

The AMA resolution calls on pharmacists to fill all legally prescribed drugs, including the morning after pill, which sometimes causes abortions, and birth control pills, which violate the beliefs of some pharmacists.

"Regardless of whether we would personally take that position, it is important to defend the rights of those who do," Dr. Rudd said.

Did you know that The Elliot Institute found that 21% of the post-abortive women surveyed reported a history of childhood physical abuse and 24% experienced childhood sexual abuse?

Sexual abuse and abortion

"As a child, Heidi was an attractive little girl with a petite stature and a tenacious personality. Her large brown eyes were framed with a long set of auburn braids.

Heidi was only seven when her 15-year-old brother Eric began sexually molesting her. Eric would sneak into her room at night to play "monster." He would sometimes hide under the bed until the lights were out, and then make scary growling sounds, banging from underneath the bed in a pulsating rhythm while Heidi nervously laughed and screamed. Afterwards he would reach around the sides of the mattress to grab her. Heidi would squeal and kick as Eric tackled her, wrestling with her in a rollicking match. One night Eric pulled down her pajama bottoms and began fondling her. Eventually, he began having sexual intercourse with her. This secret ritual was shrouded by a pact of silence. "Don't tell anyone," Eric instructed, "or you'll get in trouble."

Again and again her brother insisted, "See, Heidi, see what you make me do!" Somewhere inside, Heidi felt responsible. Her emotions progressed from fear to submission and helplessness. At times, the sex caused a lot of pain. Sometimes she would endure the abuse by imagining another scene to get her mind refocused on something more pleasant. Other times, she would zoom in on the ticking of the clock, concentrating very hard on each rhythmic tick-tock, counting each beat into what felt like infinity. "It will be over soon," she promised herself. "It will be over soon." When Eric was finished, she always felt an awkward sense of shame... like something inside her was too dirty ever to be seen.

As Heidi grew older, Eric continued to sexually abuse her. By the time she was a teenager, Eric's friends were taking turns having sex with her. Heidi mistakenly assumed that this was what all boys did. She accepted the mistreatment, thinking it was normal conduct for girls and boys. Added to this embedded concept was the unfortunate message that it was the girl who supposedly drove the boy to acts of passion and lust. Heidi began to hear the same message from other boys: "Oh, girl, just look at what you do to me!" Not surprisingly, by age 12 Heidi was overly sensual and carried herself in a provocative manner. The childhood sexual abuse and incest led her directly into a promiscuous teenage lifestyle where she allowed herself to be used by men as an object for their pleasure and perversions.
[..]

Heidi had her first abortion when she was only 15. While sitting in the waiting room, Heidi dimly heard the old familiar voice running through her mind: "Don't tell anyone; you'll get in trouble."

Later, while she was lying flat on the abortion table, her feet were placed firmly in stirrups. Heidi felt terror as the abortionist entered the room. "Open your legs," he firmly instructed. Reluctantly, Heidi did as she was told. The doctor moved in quickly, plunging his cold steel instruments in and out of her body... destroying the life inside. Another familiar voice began to re-play inside her mind. "Just listen to the clock... tick-tock one, tick-tock two," she whispered. "It will all be over soon." Heidi had become skilled at dissociating from bad things as they were happening to her.

Before her twenty-first birthday, Heidi had already undergone five abortions. After that, she stopped counting them."

"The rape was bad but I could have gotten over it. The abortion is something I will never get over. No one realizes how much that event damaged my life. I hate my rapist, but I hate the abortionist too. I can't believe I paid to be raped again. This will affect the rest of my life." - Nina

I overdosed on pills more than once and ended up getting my stomach pumped twice in the hospital."

Tom at Truth and Action links to this article on underground assisted suicides and euthnasia:
Such grisly details were revealed in Ogden's first study, in which 17 individuals, including doctors, nurses, counselors, social workers and two priests, told him precisely how they had helped AIDS patients kill themselves. But the biggest surprise was that many of these deaths were not the "good deaths" often described in proeuthanasia books, which tend to romanticize the process. Of the 34 euthanasia cases, Ogden found that half were botched and ultimately resulted in increased suffering. In five situations, suffocation was unsuccessful. In one instance, the individual who assisted in the suicide had to resort to shooting the patient--in another, to slitting his wrists with a razor blade. These failed attempts often led to the acts of euthanasia taking several hours or longer to complete; in one case, it took four days for the person to die.

What we pro-lifers didn't know...

Bush's NIH funds research using tissue from surgically aborted babies?

Here is a article written by Lydia at Blogs for Terri last year:
In 1993 Congress passed a law, signed by Bill Clinton, that stipulated that the President could not stop the NIH from funding research using tissue from surgically aborted babies. Not that Clinton _wanted_ to stop such funding, mind you. But he liked the idea of making it hard for later Presidents to stop it. However, during the Clinton administration Congress also (paradoxically) banned funding for research that destroyed unimplanted embryos. All the focus in the news now is on funding for destructive embryo research. Bush compromised a bit with his "August 9, 2001" speech when he first took office, but there are still restrictions on federal funding for this research, and the lefties are clamoring for it to be fully funded. But all the while, due to the 1993 law, Bush's NIH funds research using tissue from surgically aborted babies with no limit to tissue from children killed before any particular date.

Many pro-lifers don't even know about this. Some are under the impression that all the furor about embryo research applies to fetal tissue research as well.

In 2002, the Family Research Council brought the fetal tissue funding by Bush's NIH to light and criticized it. Read about it HERE.

National Right to Life had said nothing about the NIH funding during Bush's administration. Once it came out independently, their greatest concern was to defend Bush, saying there was nothing he could do about it because of the 1993 law...

Here is NRLC's own piece on the matter. It appears that they are right insofar as the 1993 law does prevent Bush from stopping such funding immediately by his own personal action.

But the Family Research Council had pointed out, relevantly enough, that if he could do nothing else, President Bush could at least ask Congress to change the law. It seemed to some (as mentioned in the article at the Priests for Life site) that there were not then enough congressional votes to pass a new ban on such funding, or even to shift the funding to the president's discretion, but it is hard to believe that it would not have been worth trying for such a change. NRLC had pressed for bills banning or limiting fetal tissue research funding during the Clinton administration. Surely in 2000 or 2002, with a supportive President, there would be even more hope of passage. President Bush has twisted congressional arms on many issues where conservatives disagree with him; it seems entirely plausible that he could have gotten his way here. But he has never once, so far as I can tell, asked Congress either to ban this funding or even to return discretion for such a ban to him.

Brian Melton at ChronWatch compares today's 'Pro-choice' abortion tactics to those of the American pre-civil war slave holding states:

The Fugitive 'Fetus' Act: Some Historical Perspectives on a Recent Abortion Controversy

"Recently, I stirred up a small hornet's nest at the ChronWatch.com blog by suggesting that slavery and abortion were comparable. Perhaps I'll stir up another one by saying that from our comparison here we can see that even the enforcement of the two immoral status quos bears significant similarities. Slaveholders felt they could use the power of the federal government to force slavery into the lives of people who firmly believed that it was wrong. Today, abortionists think the same of Pro-lifers, however "diverse" and relativistic their language may be.

The hypocrisy cannot be clearer. Just like the slaveholders, abortionists believe that everyone should enjoy equal rights, but the right to an abortion is somehow more equal than the right of a pro-life pharmacist to abstain. A Christian must remove even a small cross at work for fear of offending someone else, but an abortionist does not have to wait even an hour or two when requesting a drug that an offended Christian earnestly and honestly believes will be used to commit murder.

In reality, they sense the truth: There is no middle ground on abortion. Like slavery and the Holocaust it is simply evil, and no amount of semantical games could ever make it right. Therefore, for the sake of a million guilty consciences, the Pro-Life movement must be silenced completely."

Pro life display compares abortion with war atrocities

Citizens of Lodz, a city in central Poland, were greeted this week by a massive pro-life display featuring 14 billboard-size photos super-imposing graphic pictures of aborted babies next to images from the Rwandan massacre of 1994 and the Srebrenica massacre of 1995 in Yugoslavia.

According to a Radio Polonia report, pictures of an aborted baby with a severed head appear next to pictures of bodies massacred in Rwanda. The display, whose author remains anonymous, is titled "Different methods. Different motives. The same result."

"These pictures definitely negate the view of pro-choice circles," said Marek Chorodniczy, who writes for Fronda, a Polish Catholic magazine. "They shouldn't be shocked by such pictures treating them as ornaments normally. However, if it does upset them, they must consider abortion a homicide then."

Heartbreaking
the pictures drawn by children who fled the oppression illustrate the horror as vividly as any photograph.

One depicts people fleeing their burning village; another shows a half-naked woman about to be raped by soldiers; yet another has a baby dumped in a rice pounder while villagers are killed.

The drawings are from a batch made by children aged 10 to 15 at Umpien refugee camp in Thailand.

Dr Martin Panter, international president of Christian Solidarity Worldwide, which has campaigned on the Burmese issue for years and recently reported evidence that the Burmese junta had used chemical weapons, said the children were given pencils and paper and asked to paint whatever they liked.

"I said it might help to draw painful things, but nothing else. Some drew typical flowers and harmless village scenes but two thirds produced images of these terrible experiences.

"Some had seen their mothers raped, or children killed. They played and looked like normal children but with this great burden of pain."

Is the death of Tiller's Down's patient intentional?

Over five months after a 19-year old Texas teen died in January during a late-term abortion received at Women's Health Care Services, the infamous late-term abortion mill owned and operated by George R. Tiller, the autopsy report is still unavailable. The delay in releasing the autopsy has placed on hold an investigation by the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts into possible improprieties that may have led to the unfortunate maternal death.

Why would the County Medical Examiner withhold this autopsy report for over five months when others are routinely released within 6-8 weeks? Evidence points to the possibility of a cover-up, and the key to understanding why this young woman died may lie in the fact that she had Down's Syndrome. More here

"There was a hose, like a vacuum cleaner attachment, and some metal instruments, all clotted with blood, but I couldn't take my eyes off the jars: two of them, over half-filled. Blood isn't just red, and it wasn't all just blood. Blood is bright, and compellingly deep, like a ruby, I suppose, but I wasn't reminded of gemstones then. Is there a biological hardwire for recognition of real blood? It was an obscenity. My heart races just in recalling the evidence of violence all over that cart, and all over me, the blood was also on me: on me, and in me. Here was the pain my mother had promised, and the death she hadn't wanted to consider. The death was in the jars, and now it was in my soul, where it has stayed.

The nurse rushed at me in a whir of white, and I smelled her perfume for the first time. She pressed my shoulders down to the table, and covered me with blankets. "You're not supposed to be up yet." It did feel better to lie down, and I started what would be years of repression. My mind could not absorb this. What was it I had seen? I was starting to feel sleepy again, but I mumbled to the nurse, who seemed suddenly like all of the other nurses I had known, solicitous and kind, "what was that...?" I heard her move the cart out of the room, and she gave no reply. I didn't deserve it, but I was grateful for the drug pulling me back into oblivion at that moment. Somehow, I was cleaned up and discharged. I don't remember any of it "

In what that has been described as a ground-breaking study, scientists in Pittsburgh say they've discovered that adult stem cells have the same ability as embryonic stem cells to multiply. The previously unknown characteristic indicates post-natal stem cells may play an important therapeutic role, according to the researchers at the city's Children's Hospital. The research showed adult cells were able to match the the capacity of embryonic cells to live through more than 200 population doublings -- a method of measuring the age of a population of cells. Bridget Deasy, a scientist in Huard's laboratory, found the post-natal cells were able to undergo population doublings while maintaining their ability to regenerate muscle in an animal model, a key finding indicating they could maintain their treatment potential.

A bill in Maine that creates a new crime of elevated aggravated assault on a pregnant woman has been signed into law by Gov. John Baldacci. Convictions, under the new law, could lead to 30-year prison sentences.

The bill, which was signed Monday, applies to anyone who assaults a pregnant woman if the fetus she is carrying dies. The legislation does not apply to fetal deaths resulting from an abortion or medical care.

Morning after pill bill passes in NY

State senators approved legislation that allows girls and women to more easily obtain a morning-after pill from pharmacists, midwives and nurses, despite opposition from lawmakers who likened the emergency contraception to abortion.

The measure, which passed Wednesday 34-27, would allow girls and women to obtain the medication over the counter without a physician's visit or prescription and without parental consent regardless of the patient's age.

Sexual violence against women in Darfur
Some of the attackers -- members of Arab militias that allied themselves with the government's campaign against the two regional rebel groups -- lurk around the camps. According to refugees and aid workers, any man who wanders far from the camps in search of firewood is likely to be killed. Many families choose to send women to fetch firewood. Although several women also have been killed, they are more likely "only" to be raped.

The government in Khartoum has been condemned internationally for its scorched-earth policies, which many have called genocide. What is clear for many in Darfur is that rape has been used systematically as a tool of war.

"The women in these camps come from villages that were attacked, and they watched their husbands and fathers and sons be slaughtered. When the attackers were done with the men, they raped the women, even the old ones. Then the women ran away and came here to the camps, but if they leave the camp to get firewood they're captured and raped by force again.

Local authorities in Darfur have done little to stop the sexual assaults on displaced women, many here have said.

"The women go to the police, but the police don't record these things in their papers," Ahmed told Catholic News Service . "They tell the women they won't help them because they allegedly fight against the government. They simply won't help them. Unless they see an attack on a woman right in front of them, they let them do what they want."

I didn't know they do abortions at NUH...

"Can you move this bed and let me put her here, next to this lady?" A nurse came in with another trolley-bed. Several moments of clinging and clanging later, a young lady was wheeled next to me. She looked troubled. I gave her a smile, hoping to lift her spirits and to cheer her up a little. Without even a glance at me, she turned away.

Wah! So cold! Aiyah...maybe she was really in pain, lah! Never mind, lah. Leave her alone.

"Do you know what operation you are going in for?" the nurse asked that young lady.
    "Yes," she answered.
    "What?" the nurse pressed further.
    "Abortion" came her reply.

Ah...so! So that was why she didn't wish to make eye contact with me. No wonder she was deep in thought and she looked so troubled. She must have been having her own internal battles to fight. Of course she wouldn't even have noticed me trying to cheer her up. My heart went out to her, too.

I found myself now praying for the child, the man who ate breakfast and for this young lady who was about to have a piece of herself cut off from her life. Lord, would she end up feeling "haunted" like my mother does by the memory of her aborted child? Would the memory of this child continue to "haunt" her conscience for the rest of her life? Please, Lord, please help her to deal with it. Help her to come to know you as her Saviour and her Friend, so that she can deal with it in your strength and with your help.

B16 emphasizes fight against legal abortion must continue

In his first book published since his election as Pope, Benedict XVI rejects the suggestion that the Church has given up its fight for the right to life of the unborn, instead emphasizing that "There is no such thing as 'small murders'.... Respect for every single life is an essential condition for anything worthy of being called social life". The book, The Europe of Benedict, in the Crisis of Cultures - only available in Italian - is a compilation of three sermons delivered between 1992 and April 2005 by the Pope while he was still Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

"Why don't we resign ourselves to the fact that we lost [the abortion] battle and dedicate our energies instead to projects where we can find greater social consensus?" Pope Benedict XVI asks rhetorically. "Recognising the sacred nature of human life and its inviolability without any exceptions is not a small problem or something that can be considered part of the pluralism of opinions in modern society," he answers.

The Holy Father also questions why modern society is repulsed by the thought of infanticide, "while becoming virtually insensitive to abortion. Maybe because in abortion you don't see the face of who will be condemned and never see the light," he wrote.

By allowing state-sanctioned execution of the unborn, "you become blind to the right of life of another, the youngest and weakest who doesn't have a voice," he wrote.

Bush's security advisor must come forward in the Schiavo case, says The Empire Journal
In March, The Empire Journal learned that Mark Dubina, special agent and supervisor with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) had charged that he was told to "shut down" his investigation into the Schiavo case, to close his file and turn it in. He says that McCabe allegedly ordered that all criminal investigations in regard to the Schiavo matter, including the FDLE investigation, be shut down. Such an alleged obstruction of justice would appear to be grounds for a federal investigation of McCabe and the Pinellas County state attorney's office.

So where is Dubina now? Gov. Bush told reporters Friday, June 17 when he made his request to McCabe for an investigation that "I have not seen or heard of this information before that there's some doubt about when she did collapse and how long it took for a phone call to be made. That is I think, worthy of some investigation".

Gov Bush appointed  Dubina to his post as primary FDLE investigator and director for the Tampa Bay Region Domestic Security Task Force  by Bush after the 9-11 terrorist attacks.  Dubina who is a certified fraud examiner would supervise all security operations for the Governor upon any visits to the Tampa Bay area and as such, would have direct contact with the Governor.

This would certainly seem to indicate that Dubina would have briefed and advised the Governor about the Schiavo case, creating serious doubt about Bush's veracity in his statements that he had no prior knowledge of the discrepancies and allegations surrounding the incidents of Feb. 25, 1990.

    Abortion, murder and choice
I recently received an email from a concerned individual who obviously disagrees with our conclusions about abortion. His message read in part:

"Abortion is not murder in my eyes because I see a very distinct difference between a fetus and a grown human being. Killing someone who has had real life experiences and a sentient mind is far worse than one who has neither (I'm not talking about when brain waves occur in pregnancy, I'm talking about awareness of and understanding of the world). This is why I support legislation against murder but not abortion. No matter how inefficient, allowing what constitutes traditional murder is simply destructive to society, much in the same way that outlawing abortion would be destructive (or at the very least, nonconstructive) to society.

The main reason I'm pro-choice is because I don't think banning abortion is the best way to stop it (just like gun control, just like the war on drugs, two miserable failures in my opinion) and because abortion is compassionate in the sense that right now the world sucks and so do the people in it.

The best way to stop something is to remove the incentive for it. With abortion: Women get abortions because they don't feel ready to raise a child or don't wan't it.'

    Bad choices

"I do not consider abortion an absolute right as part and parcel of our right to privacy. Actually, neither does Roe v Wade. If you read the decision, you'll take note of the fact that the privacy issue is addressed based on the privacy of medical discussions between doctors and patients, and the resulting decisions made based on those discussions. The Supreme Court said that the states can't intervene in such private matters wherein medical problems and treatments are discussed and that, since it cannot, it also cannot determine the medical necessity of such potential treatments which happen, in some cases, to include abortions. Terri's ashes buried today

The remains of Terri Schindler, who was cremated two days after an autopsy, was buried Monday at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park in Clearwater, Florida, in the presence of her husband, Michael Schiavo, some of his brothers and a priest.

Terri's bronze grave marker was inscribed with the words "I kept my promise", apparently aimed at memorializing her husband who successfully brought about her death by withholding food and water. Terri's life was robbed and the perpetuator marked his victory by inscribing her grave with a tribute to himself. Michael Schiavo, who had said he promised his wife he would not keep her alive artificially and waged a long legal battle to remove her feeding tube, also listed Feb. 25, 1990, as the date she "Departed this Earth". That was the day she collapsed and fell into what most doctors said was an irreversible vegetative state.

    Joe Mariani: Durbin's despicable dictum
In order to claim protection under the Geneva Conventions , participants must fight wearing a recognisable uniform or badge, fight under officers who can be held responsible for them, carry their weapons openly, and -- perhaps most important -- fight according to the rules of war laid out in the Geneva Conventions themselves. The Geneva Conventions are not meant to be a handicap to decent people -- they're meant to be a deterrent to keep rogue nations from breaking those rules. If one side of a conflict decides not to fight according to Geneva Conventions, then they forfeit their protection as well. The two are locked together -- that's the rules. Yet Liberals continue to claim that we -- not the terrorists who deliberately murder innocents -- are uninterested in laws and human rights.

We're all for human rights, more than any other country has ever been in the entire history of mankind. But we're fighting an enemy who isn't. We're fighting an enemy that has gladly used their own children as suicide bombers, and deliberately targets children. We're fighting an enemy that will settle for nothing less than total global domination by their twisted version of Islam. We're fighting an enemy that cannot be bought off or reasoned with. Note to Liberals: if you want to play patty-cake with those inhuman barbaric bastards, gamble with your own life. Don't do it with mine, or those of my friends and family.

"If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime -- Pol Pot or others -- that had no concern for human beings."

Wouldn't it be nice if he had felt the same about the unborn and abortion?
    Sen. Durbin
  • Voted NO on criminal penalty for harming unborn fetus during other crime.

  • Voted NO on banning partial birth abortions except for maternal life.

  • Voted NO on maintaining ban on Military Base Abortions.

  • Vote on a motion to table [kill] an amendment that would repeal the ban on privately funded abortions at overseas military facilities.

  • Voted NO on disallowing overseas military abortions.

Schiavo autopsy conclusion flawed, says Nobel Prize nominated doctor

Dr. Hammesfahr has released the following statement in response to the autopsy report on Terri Schindler Schiavo:
We have seen a lot on the autopsy of Terri Schindler Schiavo in recent days, that I feel needs to be addressed. To ignore these comments will allow future 'Terri Schiavo's' to die needlessly after the wishes of clinicians and family are ignored.

Considering that there were so many physicians and therapists who were willing to step forward to treat Terri Schiavo, from university based practitioners to those in private practice, it clearly shows that the mainstream medical community across the board, those involved in treating patients, knew that they could help Terri.

The record must be set straight. As we noted in the press, there was no heart attack, or evident reason for this to have happened (and certainly not of Terri's making).

Unlike the constant drumbeat from the husband, his attorneys, and his doctors, the brain tissue was not dissolved, with a head of just spinal fluid. In fact, large areas were "relatively preserved."

The purpose of the therapies offered by so many, from major universities, brain injury centers, and from private practice physicians, is to improve and restore quality of life, and function, which the mainstream medical community clearly tried to get to her.

I have had a chance to look at Dr. Nelson's analysis of the brain tissue, and essentially, as a clinician, these are my thoughts.

The autopsy results confirmed my opinion and Dr. Maxfield's opinions, that the frontal areas of the brains, the areas that deal with awareness and cognition were relatively intact. To use Dr. Nelson's words, "relatively preserved." In fact, the relay areas from the frontal and front temporal regions of the brain, to the spinal cord and the brain stem, by way of the basal ganglia, were preserved, thus the evident responses which she was able to express to her family and to the clinicians seeing her or viewing her videotape. The Spect scan confirmed these areas were functional and not scar tissue, and that was apparently also confirmed on Dr. Nelson's review of the slides. Dr. Maxfield's estimates of retained brain weight were apparently accurate, although there may have been some loss of brain weight due to the last two weeks of dehydration.

Dr. Maxfield and myself both emphasized that she was a woman trapped in her body, similar to a child with cerebral palsy, and that was borne out by the autopsy, showing greater injury in the motor and visual centers of the brain. Obviously, the pathologists comments that she could not see were not borne out by reality, and thus his assessment must represent sampling error. The videotapes clearly showed her seeing, and even Dr. Cranford, for the husband, commented to her that, when she could see the balloon, she could follow it with her eyes as per his request.

That she could not swallow was obviously not borne out by the reality that she was swallowing her saliva, about 1.5 liters per day of liquid, and the clinical swallowing tests done by Dr. Young and Dr. Carpenter. Thus, there appears to be some limitations to the clinical accuracy of an autopsy in evaluating function.

With respect to the issue of trauma, that certainly does not appear to be answered adequately. Some of the types of trauma that are suspected were not adequately evaluated in this assessment. Interestingly, both myself and at least one neurologist for the husband testified to the presence of neck injuries. The issue of a forensic evaluation for trauma, is highly specialized. Hence the wish of the family to have observers which was refused by the examiner.

Ultimately, based on the clinical evidence and the autopsy results, an aware woman was killed.

Gov. Bush battles NYT over Terri's case

Two days ago, the Times criticized the governor in an editorial called "Autopsy on the Schiavo Tragedy." While not naming Bush, it denounced "opportunistic politicians" who exploited the case.Today, the Times published a hard-hitting, critical letter from Jeb Bush--and another editorial attacking him.

Bush, in his letter, said that the Times' "grotesque and chilling disrespect for the sanctity of life has never been more apparent than in your June 16 editorial...Terri Schiavo was a deeply loved daughter, wife, sister and friend. The fact that her brain was atrophied or that she was blind or could not have been rehabilitated doesn't change that fact.

"While many medical professionals said she was in a persistent vegetative state, still other highly respected neurologists said there was a chance that she was not.

"In cases where patients do not have an expressed written directive regarding end-of-life decisions and where the patient's guardian has a conflict of interest, it only makes sense to err on the side of life....Despite claims of cynicism and being 'agenda-driven,' we will continue to strive to protect our most vulnerable citizens. All innocent human life is precious, and government has a duty to protect the weak, the disabled and the vulnerable."

While not directly responding to the letter, the Times published another editorial, which opened with:

"After Terri Schiavo was finally allowed to rest in peace on March 31, we hoped she would also have been granted in death what she surely would have wanted - an end to the bitterness that divided her family and made her private suffering a public spectacle....

"And so it was heartbreaking yesterday to see Gov. Jeb Bush of Florida thrust himself back into this tragedy just two days after the results of Ms. Schiavo's autopsy showed that her condition had been beyond hope and beyond therapy, that she most likely had been in a persistent vegetative state and that her relatives' allegations that she had been abused by her husband were false.

"For most of the nation, that news provided closure on a wrenching episode. But not for Mr. Bush, who asked a state prosecutor to investigate Michael Schiavo, Ms. Schiavo's husband. Mr. Bush said he wanted to clear up discrepancies in Mr. Schiavo's statements over the last 15 years about the time that elapsed between his finding his wife on the floor and his 911 call...

"Of all the politicians who tragically failed to understand and respect the sanctity and privacy of family life in this case, only Mr. Bush seems determined to save face by disturbing the family's peace further and berating those who had been saying all along that he was going down a terrible road."

    Here is Gov. Bush's letter

Sen. Dick Durbin, terrorists and the unborn
The senator's humanitarian impulse toward terror suspects seems curious, given his efforts to protect abortionists' "right" to haul fully formed children out of the womb up to their necks, pierce their skulls, suck out their brains and extract the dead bodies.

There is no plausible medical reason to justify this cruelty. In 1996, more than 600 physicians, including former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, issued this statement: "Never is the partial-birth abortion procedure medically indicated." Not to save the life of the mother, nor to protect the health of the mother. By the time you get to virtually birthing the child, there is no excuse for killing him or her.

The American Medical Association concurred and endorsed the legislative ban Sen. Durbin couldn't bring himself to support. To what we can only assume was Sen. Durbin's relief, a federal judge in Nebraska struck down the law within an hour after President Bush signed it on Nov. 5, 2003.

"It's important that they promote this euthanasia agenda," Bobby said of the media coverage. "If you look at the way they handled my sister's case, they justified killing her."

The media's bias is "evidence of where we've come as a society - that we're perfectly okay defining someone as profoundly brain damaged and killing that person. We're starving people to death for the simple reason that they are brain damaged. Where is the compassion in that?"

    Bobby on the autopsy..
"It places more suspicion on Michael Schiavo than before," he said. "We've seen this for a long time now - everyone is concerned about Terri' condition and killing her because she not longer has any value for society, but they don't care what put her there in the first place."

Bobby said the public should be asking "some serious questions about what is going on here - he is the only one that knows what happened."

    .. and saving Terri
"It's been tough... You need to have faith in God and Christ because if you don't you're going to be steering without a rudder."

"There is so much evil in this world. If you don't put your faith in God, then at the end if can really consume you."

Here's how you can help Susan Torres

Alexa swing by at 3:21 PM

Following the release of Terri's autopsy report, Gov. Jeb Bush has called for a probe into what happened the night in 1990 when she collapsed and her stopped beating.
Bush said Thursday that he had talked to Dr. Jon Thogmartin, the Pinellas-Pasco medical examiner, a day before Thogmartin publicly released the results of his autopsy on Terri Schiavo, who died on March 31 after a protracted legal and political battle.

Bush said Thogmartin told him he had gained access to information suggesting that there was a 70-minute delay between when Michael Schiavo first heard a ''bump'' in the early morning hours of Feb. 25, 1990 and when he eventually called 911.

''I have not seen or heard of this information before that there's some doubt about when she did collapse and how long it took for a phone call to be made,'' Bush told reporters. "That is I think, worthy of some investigation."

Brain dead woman kept alive to give birth

(CNN is running this AP story -- anyone know about this?)

A brain-dead woman, Susan Torres, is dying of cancer and she is being kept on life support in hopes that her 21-week-old fetus survives, and the woman's husband said he is certain that's what she would have wanted.
Jason Torres said doctors believe the fetus could have a chance if Susan Torres lives another month and her cancer stays away from her uterus.

He said he decided to keep his wife on life support when doctors at Virginia Hospital Center offered him the chance to disconnect the machines after concluding she would not recover.

"I hate seeing her on those darned machines, and I hate using her as a husk, a carrying case, because she herself is worth so much more,'" Torres said in an interview in Thursday's USA Today. "But Susan really wanted this baby. And she's a very - how should I put this? - a willful lady. That's probably why she's made it this far.''

Susan Torres, a 26-year-old researcher at the National Institutes of Health, lost consciousness from a stroke May 7 after aggressive melanoma spread to her brain. Jason Torres said doctors told him his wife's brain functions have stopped.

Torres said the fetus appears to be thriving, but his wife's doctors have told him they know of no cases in which a brain-dead mother with melanoma has delivered a baby.

    Developing...

The Schindlers respond to Terri's autopsy report
Vitadamo disputed the notion she said appears in media stories abou Terri that her sister would not have wanted to live in her incapacitated condition or to be the victim of euthanasia.

"There is absolutely no evidence that Terri wanted to die of dehydration, or that she believed that that the level of one's disability gives anyone the moral and legal right to end another's life," Vitadamo said.

"Terri was dehydrated to death before our eyes. The moral shame of what happened is not erased because of Terri's level of disability," she added.

Vitadamo said that society has "lost our compassion for the disabled" by virtue of saying people who are blind or mentally disabled, like Terri, are better off dying.

Terri's sister pointed out some of the key findings of the report that she indicated corroborated some of the things the Schindler family asserted throughout the legal battle. They included:

    * Terri had a strong heart and was likely capable of living for a decade or more had she not been starved. Terri's condition was not terminal.

    * Terri had injuries to her brain, but she was not brain dead. "Many seem to not understand this absolutely critical distinction."

    * The medical report ruled out bulimia and heart attack as a cause of Terri's condition, leaving potential physical abuse on the list of possibilities.

    * Vitadamo said the report leaves a 70-minute gap between the time Teri collapsed and the time her estranged husband Michael called 911. "The major question for our family that now remains is what happened," she said. "When a person is without blood and oxygen to their brain, 70 minutes is a terribly long time when each second counts."

    * Vitadamo questioned how Terri could have been found lying face down on the floor with her hands crossed and up high against her chest.

    * Vitadamo said the underlying basis of the malpractice case has been disproved with the autopsy ruling out bulimia as the cause of the collapse. "Our family would encourage Michael Schiavo to do the right thing and return the funds that were paid by the innocent doctors who were sued for Terri's collapse," she said.

    * Terri's sister also asked Michael to tell the Schindler family his plans for Terri's remains so they can give her a proper burial.

    * She indicated that the report showed Terri would not be able to eat and drink on her own and said the Schindler family wasn't surprised because she had been denied therapy for twelve years.

    * She pointed out that Dr. William Cheshire, a neurologist from the Mayo Clinic, agree with the Schindler family that Terri was awake and aware and at least somewhat cognitive.

    * Vitadamo said they knew Terri was visually impaired, Terri clearly saw friends and family, and that Terri could have lost her eyesight during the starvation.

    * She said that it appeared contradictory that Terri was given morphine and yet the autopsy claims Terri was unable to feel pain because of her mental condition.

Vitadamo closed and reaffirmed the Schindler family's commitment to fighting for the rights of disabled people.

"Our prayer at this time is that our Nation will remember the plight of persons with disabilities and commit within our hearts to defend their lives and their dignity for many generations to come," she said.

I do not understand why people who want to save the whales (so do I) find campaigns to save humans so much less arresting. I do not understand their lack of passion. But the save-the-whales people are somehow rarely the stop-abortion-please people.. The PETA people, who say they are committed to ending cruelty to animals, seem disinterested in the fact of late-term abortion, which is a cruel procedure performed on a human.

As the spotlight continues on Tiller, here is a story of Baby Sarah Brown:

In July of 1993, a 15-year old mother was brought to Women's Health Care Services to abort her little girl in the late stages of pregnancy. In fact, so far advanced was the pregnancy that the baby was already in position for delivery.

Not having yet perfected his induction method of abortion, according to accounts, Tiller "injected the baby's head, in two places, the left side of her forehead above the eyebrow and at the base of the skull, with Potassium Chloride, leaving permanent burn marks and needle track scars."

When the young mother returned the next day for the actual abortion procedure, it was found that the baby had not died, as intended, from the lethal injections into her head. The mother was sent to a local hospital where the baby was delivered, wrapped in a blanket, and left in a bassinet without attendance to die.

Amazingly, after 24 hours, the child continued to live in spite of the fact that she had not been cleaned up, her umbilical cord was still attached and she had received no hydration or nourishment. A nurse took pity on the baby and contacted an attorney, who in turn contacted a loving family that adopted the little girl, whom they named Sarah.

    The five-year abortion

Although doctors said Sarah would not survive eight weeks, under the loving care of her new family she lived for five years. Tiller's attack on Sarah impaired her growth and left her brain damaged, blind, and unable to walk. Nevertheless, her family members never viewed her as a burden and were blessed to be a part of her short life.

It was noted at her memorial service that Tiller succeeded in killing little Sarah, but it took him five years to do it.

    The ugly truths..

The intense battle to prevent Terri Schiavo's husband from removing her feeding tube was horrible enough. To think that some American Catholic universities - and their ethics, theology, law, and medical professors - bear some responsibility for Schiavo's slow death is almost too much to imagine.

    Teaching euthanasia

"It's well-known that the culture of death has made inroads into Catholic higher education in the form of abortion advocacy, but little attention is given to end-of-life issues - or so it seemed before the Schiavo debacle. When six Catholic university professors signed an amicus brief in favor of removing Schiavo's feeding tube, the Cardinal Newman Society launched an investigation that revealed the dark side of some Catholic university faculties, which include leading advocates of assisted suicide, vocal dissenters from Vatican teaching on euthanasia, and even top officials of national pro-death advocacy organizations."

Legislation in Congress to provide funding for crisis pregnancy centers to purchase ultrasound machines isn't moving anywhere because of concern that the government would too closely regulate such centers if they accept public funds. The measure which was introduced Rep Cliff Stearns, a Florida Republican, were met with generous support from the pro-life community.

Part of the concern, according to Dan Allen, a spokesman for House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, is that some centers worry they will come under federal scrutiny if they accept public funds, especially if an abortion advocate occupies the White House in the future. DeLay "believes [this measure] could put excessive federal regulation on how care is provided," Allen told Christianity Today.

    It's out, folks..

Click here to view (if that doesn't work, click here) Terri's autopsy report

Pinellas County medical examiner Dr. Jon Thogmartin said he was sorry he could not provide a more definitive answer for Terri's parents, the Schindlers, of what caused the loss of oxygen and blood flow to their daughter's brain causing her incapacitation, The Empire Journal reports. He also said that the 15 years between the time of the original incident and the time of her death greatly hampered his findings. His findings indicated that Terri died on March 31 of dehydration, not starvation, 13 days after her feeding tube was removed by order of probate court judge George Greer.
.. the anoxic brain injury sustained by Terri Schiavo on Feb. 25, 1990, was caused by lack of blood flow and oxygen to her brain but that the cause of that condition could not be detected and was undetermined. He did not rule out that the injuries could have been caused by smothering.

He said that there was no evidence of bulimia and the assumption of bulimia presented at the medical malpractice trial had simply been accepted and not challenged. He said there was absolutely nothing to support the theory of bulimia as presented by Michael's attorneys. He also ruled out the 15-year fallacy presented by the mainstream media that she had sustained a heart attack, saying that her collapse was the result of an "external problem outside of the heart causing the heart not to beat". He said there was no evidence that she had had any heart problems prior to her collapse and said that the fact she lived 15 years after her resuscitation was testimony to the strength of her heart.

Thogmartin further disputed the potassium inbalance caused by purging and bulimia theory perpetuated by the mainstream media saying there was absolutely no evidence of such...The medical examiner said that she had incurred massive neuronal damage and that no amount of therapy or treatment would have replaced the lost neurons.

In Washington, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said the autopsy did nothing to change President Bush's position that Schiavo's feeding tube should not have been disconnected. He had signed a bill, rushed through by Congress in March, that was a last-ditch effort to restore her feeding tube.

No excuses for dehydrating the disabled, CWA says
Terri Schiavo's autopsy results confirm what was feared - she was disabled, and her death was due to the deliberate denial of hydration," said Wendy Wright, CWA's senior policy director. "The autopsy report described Terri's medical history and condition in detail, but the cold reality of the truth is that her cause of death was 'dehydration'. Terri Schiavo died because the court ordered the removal of the instrument that provided her water.

"There is no medical condition or disability that should ever be championed as a justifiable reason to deny water to a human being. Every human life has worth and a purpose apart from its 'merit' to society that must be vigorously defended and upheld, not crushed."

"While people may personally dread becoming handicapped, people with disabilities deserve mercy, not malice. Only a calloused society in moral freefall would deny a disabled person her most basic need - water"

Priests for Life's Fr. Frank says, "No details of this autopsy change the moral evaluation of what happened to Terri. Her physical injuries and disabilities never made her less of a person. No amount of brain injury ever justifies denying a person proper humane care. That includes food and water.

A person with a 'profoundly atrophied' brain needs profound care and love. Terri did not die from an atrophied brain. She died from an atrophy of compassion on the part of her estranged husband and those who helped him to have her deliberately killed."

Melody: When I saw the picture, the famous picture of him, with a bunch of other white guys, gleefully signing away our rights as women... all I could think was, "ok, how is that not just pure evil?"

Gloria: Well, you know, there is certainly evil effect. There are certainly going to be millions of women and a lot of men who simply are not alive because he's in the White House. There are going to be whole species of animals, and living things, and plants that are not alive anymore, and will never come back, because: he killed them. So, that's an evil impact. I don't think it's inevitable. He wasn't born that way.

Removing stem cells from human embryos kills them! Congress should reserve funding for ethical stem cell research instead, says NRLC's Laura Echevarria

"Advocates for research involving the destruction of embryos have repeatedly used the term "cells" or "clump of cells" when describing these embryos. Embryos also have been referred to as"eggs." Here's the deal: Embryos are human beings at their earliest stages. They are no longer human eggs. Any first-year biology student or medical student can tell you that. Embryos have begun the process of developing after fertilization and they have everything necessary to develop into adults just like you or me. They need only time, nourishment, and a safe place to live until they're old enough to make it on their own (for most embryos, that's around 18 or 19 years of age)."

According to the interim report, teens who participated in abstinence programs had an increased awareness of the potential consequences of sexual activity before marriage, thought more highly of abstinent behaviors, and less favorable opinions about sexual activity before marriage than did students who were not in abstinence programs.

"Students who are in these [abstinence education] programs are recognizing that abstinence is a positive choice," HHS Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation Michael O'Grady said. "Abstinence education programs that help our young people address issues of healthy relationships, self-esteem, decision-making, and effective communications are important to keeping them healthy and safe."
