NBC refuses to air pro-life ad during Super Bowl
The pro-life ad, created by CatholicVote.org, portrays President Barack Obama as a preborn baby. It features images of a child in utero set to music and reads: "The child's future is a broken home. He will be abandoned by his father. His single mother will struggle to raise him.

"Despite the hardships he will endure, this child will become the first African-American president."

Vatican criticizes Obama's decision to end ban on federal funding for international groups that perform or provide information on abortion
Monsignor Rino Fisichella, who heads the Vatican's Pontifical Academy for Life, urged Obama to listen to all voices in America without "the arrogance of those who, being in power, believe they can decide of life and death."

Fisichella said in an interview published Saturday in Corriere della Sera that "if this is one of President Obama's first acts, I have to say, in all due respect, that we're heading quickly toward disappointment."

"This deals a harsh blow not only to us Catholics but to all the people across the world who fight against the slaughter of innocents that is carried out with the abortion," another top official with the Academy for Life, Monsignor Elio Sgreccia, told the ANSA news agency.

"Among the many good things that he could have done, Barack Obama instead chose the worst," he was quoted as saying Saturday.

Obama reverses Bush abortion-funds policy
"For too long, international family planning assistance has been used as a political wedge issue, the subject of a back and forth debate that has served only to divide us," Obama said in a statement released by the White House. "I have no desire to continue this stale and fruitless debate."

He said the ban was unnecessarily broad and undermined family planning in developing countries.

"In the coming weeks, my administration will initiate a fresh conversation on family planning, working to find areas of common ground to best meet the needs of women and families at home and around the world," the president said.

Obama issued the presidential memorandum rescinding the Bush policy without coverage by the media, late Friday afternoon.

Wyoming legislators introduce three pro-life bills
One bill would require doctors to perform ultrasound examinations and show pregnant women the features of their fetus before performing an abortion.

Another bill would require anyone who performs an abortion to file a state report specifying, among other information, whether the pregnancy resulted from sexual assault. Fines would be imposed on anyone who failed to comply.

A third bill would change the state's criminal statutes to expand the definition of a victim in homicide cases and other crimes to include "unborn children."

NARAL Pro-Choice Wyoming, an abortion rights group based in Laramie, says it will fight all three bills. Executive Director Sharon Breitweiser said her group views the proposals as efforts to undermine abortion rights in the state.

Rep. Bob Brechtel, a Casper Republican, is a sponsor or co-sponsor of all three bills.

Senate Democrat files national bill to help pregnant women, reduce abortions
Sen. Bob Casey, of Pennsylvania, has re-filed the Pregnant Women Support Act, S 270, which would be a pro-life alternative to FOCA.

The bill, a top project of Democrats for Life, contains several provisions to help expectant mothers and their children during their pregnancy and after they give birth.

The bill would help pregnant high school and college students stay in school, promote adoption, and calls for increased health care and nutrition aid, Casey said.

“We must work toward real solutions to the issue of abortion by targeting the underlying factors that often lead women to have abortions," he told LifeNews.com in a statement. "This is precisely what the Pregnant Women Support Act will do."

Pro-life groups: Bush had best pro-life record of any President
"In the annals of history, George W. Bush will be remembered as a president who believed and fought to protect innocent human life," Wendy Wright, president of Concerned Women for America (CWA), told CNSNews.com. "While we'll never know how many lives were saved, and rarely will a person know that his or her life was rescued because of his policies, we do know that he set a standard that others can follow."

"We have seen in Bush the most pro-life president that we have ever had for this cause of defending the unborn," Father Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life, told CNSNews.com. "He set up a tremendous groundwork." [..]

"Bush has achieved more than any other pro-life president," Darla St. Martin, co-executive director of National Right to Life, told CNSNew.com. "Bush was just outstanding. John-Paul Deddens, executive director of Students for Life of Illinois, shares how he went from just being pro-life to acting pro-life
"I was content thinking about being pro-life," said Deddens, who began Students for Life while a student at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. "The campus already had a pro-life group, but they really weren't doing that much. (He thought), 'Girls are having abortions every Friday on this campus; what can we do on a weekly basis to change that?'"

Living in a Catholic dorm on the U of I campus, Deddens said he constantly was surrounded by people who proclaimed that they supported life.

It wasn't until he stood outside one of the abortion clinics on campus to witness to those going inside on Fridays that he knew he could help make a difference in bringing people to the pro-life mindset.

"I was standing there watching these girls going in, and there was a girl carrying this book and I recognized this book as a freshman chemistry textbook," he said. "This was a freshman or sophomore going in to have an abortion. She could've been in any of my classes."

Arkansas bill would ban late-term abortions
House Bill 1113 by Rep. Dawn Creekmore, D-Hensley, would make it a felony for a physician to perform a late-term abortion in Arkansas unless the procedure is necessary to save the life of the woman.

The bill would not impose any punishment on a woman on whom such a procedure is performed.

Creekmore said she believes late-term abortions are "murder".

Arkansas banned late-term abortions in 1999, but the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis later struck down the law as an undue burden on a woman's right to an abortion.

In 2007, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that a federal ban on late-term abortions did not burden the right to an abortion.

"This piece of legislation is just codifying with federal legislation, with new language that we expect will be upheld," Creekmore said.

Putting the ban into state law would allow state judges to refer to it rather than having to look to federal courts, Creekmore said.

Persistent pro-lifer prevents abortion in Orange County with appeal to unborn baby's dad
As he was leaving, I gestured to him to stop and talk to me and he did so very willingly. Immediately, and with an apparent conviction of conscience, he began to justify the abortion, telling me he was not even sure if he was the father, etc.

I began by handing him a flier for a local crisis pregnancy center, the pamphlet, "For Men Only," showed him some pictures of developing fetuses and began to answer his justifications and have a conversation with him. We went on for a few minutes, and then I began to exhort him to go back in there and bring her out and have her talk to me. I warned him that if he did nothing and let this transpire then he would share in the guilt of murder, just like the driver in a drive-by shooting. At first he was hesitant, but after some time he backed his car into the parking lot, where I continued to talk to him and encourage him to go in there and get her out.

He tried to call her on her cell phone and when she did not answer, he made the decision to re-enter the clinic. I asked him his name and he told me it was Joseph. I replied, "Joseph, the protector of Mary and the child Jesus." He nodded with apparent understanding. Within seconds of his entering the clinic he was actually able to bring out his girlfriend, abortion forms in hand.

Krispy Kreme celebrates Obama with pro-abortion doughnuts
The doughnut giant released the following statement yesterday:

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. (NYSE: KKD) is honoring American's sense of pride and freedom of choice on Inauguration Day, by offering a free doughnut of choice to every customer on this historic day, Jan. 20. By doing so, participating Krispy Kreme stores nationwide are making an oath to tasty goodies -- just another reminder of how oh-so-sweet 'free' can be.

Just an unfortunate choice of words? For the sake of our Wednesday morning doughnut runs, we hope so. The unfortunate reality of a post Roe v. Wade America is that 'choice' is synonymous with abortion access and celebration of 'freedom of choice' is a tacit endorsement of abortion rights on demand.

President-elect Barack Obama promises to be the most virulently pro-abortion president in history. Millions more children will be endangered by his radical abortion agenda.

Celebrating his inauguration with 'Freedom of Choice' doughnuts -- only two days before the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision to decriminalize abortion -- is not only extremely tacky, it's disrespectful and insensitive and makes a mockery of a national tragedy.

A misconstrued concept of 'choice' has killed over 50 million preborn children since Jan. 22, 1973. Does Krispy Kreme really want their free doughnuts to celebrate this 'freedom.'

Third "Window of Life" for unwanted babies inaugurated in Poland
The "Window of Life" is a place where mothers who do not want to or cannot provide for their children, can anonymously and safely bring newborns in order for them to be cared for and placed for adoption.

The window established in Czestochowa, in the convent of the Sisters of the Congregation of Servants of the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God, is the third Window in Poland, following those in Krakow and Warsaw.

Archbishop Nowak, speaking at the inauguration ceremony, said, "The 'Window of Life of Blessed Edmund Bojanowski' is a sign of hope for newborn children. It is also a means of using goodness and mercy to fight abortion. In Poland, experts say that abortion has claimed the lives of nearly 20 million children in the past several years. The 'Window of Life' in Czestochowa is, therefore, the defense of human life.”

The Window of Life is built into the walls of the convent. It is a warm and ventilated room with a window which can be opened from the outside. As soon as the baby is placed inside the Window, a signal alerts the nuns who come to pick up the child and provide immediate medical care.

U.S. Bishops' pro-life office corrects 'misleading' FOCA novena message
In a Friday email to those with questions about the novena, Richard Doerflinger, Associate Director of the USCCB's Secretariat of Pro-life Activities, stated "this novena item is misleading in any number of ways."

"Of course there is no possibility of FOCA being passed this month," he stated. He also denied a rumor that, upon taking office, President-elect Obama could enact FOCA simply by executive order.

"There may or may not be presidential orders in the first few days of the Administration to reverse President Bush's policies on stem cell research" and the Mexico City Policy, which forbids funding for international organizations which perform or promote abortions.

"We are fairly sure that our opponents will try for various less ambitious efforts before they try for FOCA, including possible attacks on some of the pro-life riders contained in appropriations bills that must be renewed by the first week of March," Doerflinger explained, noting that the Prevention First Act which mandates contraception coverage is of concern to the Secretariat.

He said a postcard produced for pro-lifers by the Secretariat emphasizes that FOCA is one of many threats. The postcard urges Congress to oppose FOCA, "any similar measure, AND to retain current policies that prevent government funding and promotion of abortion."

Doerflinger did warn that if abortion rights advocates succeed in lesser efforts, such as overturning the Hyde Amendment or a similar "longstanding funding rider" prohibiting abortion funding, "they will probably be emboldened to go for bigger goals."

The novena announcement's contention that women could be forced to undergo abortions, Doerflinger said, is "very strange". He said such laws would "presumably" be unconstitutional under Roe v. Wade.

"But even FOCA itself is expressed throughout in terms of the woman's freedom of choice over pregnancy, birth and abortion, so such a pro-coercion amendment would have to say the exact opposite of what the text of the bill now says."

However, he added, coercion of pro-life health care providers under FOCA is "indeed a legitimate and grave concern."

"FOCA itself would not directly force Catholic hospitals to perform abortions, but could be used to invalidate the laws that currently prevent others (including governmental bodies) from exerting such pressure," Doerflinger explained.

FOCA's provision that government may not "discriminate" against the exercise of the abortion right in providing public benefits, information and services, he added, "seems to insist that all health programs that involve women of childbearing age must cover abortion to the same extent that they cover childbirth."

"That mandate would be used to nullify or undermine conscience clauses within those programs, to create new 'basic benefits' mandates that pro-life providers cannot provide in good conscience."

"The effect would be to push Catholic and other pro-life providers increasingly out of public health programs such as Medicaid, Medicare, etc., making it impossible for them to survive."

"We have to remember that FOCA is a very unusual kind of statute. It does not require or prohibit actions on the part of private individuals. It is a law about what kinds of laws you are allowed to have. It is a statute written to do the kind of thing that Supreme Court decisions interpreting the Constitution ordinarily do -- but it is even more extreme than the Supreme Court's own decisions," Doerflinger wrote.

"In that sense, it is indeed a power grab on the part of Congress, telling all 50 states what laws they are not allowed to enact," Doerflinger argued.

"But we also need to be careful that we don't make charges we can't back up. FOCA is radical enough to be frightening without doing that!"

ACLU sues Bush Admin for letting Catholic Bishops spare women abortions
The pro-abortion law firm sued the Department of Health and Human Services over allowing the Catholic bishops to institute a pro-life policy.

Since 2006, the health department has allowed the U.S. Conference of Catholic bishops to limit the kind of services it offers women who are sex trafficking victims under the grant money it receives through the Trafficking Victims Protection Act.

Through the Act, the federal government distributes funds to cover an array of services needed by the more than 14,000 individuals, mostly women, who are victimized by commercial sex trafficking.

Some of the women who are sold into prostitution become pregnant and many have abortions without abortion businesses doing any checking to find out if the abortion is pressured or coerced.

Sensitive to how women are exploited, the Catholic bishops, who have their own program to help these victims, prohibit any subcontractors from using the funds to pay for or promote abortions.

Instead, the Catholic bishops provides comprehensive case management services to survivors including medical and mental health services.

British woman said no to abortion, set to give birth to conjoined twins with one body
Lisa and her fiancé Mike Pedace have been told the twins have only a 20% chance of survival.

But Lisa, from Portsmouth, told the Sun newspaper she would not consider an abortion.

"They're conjoined at the upper part of the body so they share one body and they've got two heads," she said.

"Doctors told me that I may never be able to conceive because of my polycystic ovary syndrome and I had practically given up.

"I thought, it's not going to happen now, so I've just got to accept it.

"They'd advised that I should have a termination mainly because it would save me heartache further down the line, but I've told them there's no way I'm going to have a termination and I want to go ahead with my pregnancy.

"I believe everything happens for a reason and there was a reason why God chose me to be their mum and there's absolutely no way I would consider an abortion.

"I'm very happy and proud of my twins and they deserve every chance in life."

Parental consent on abortions on Alaska's Legislative docket
Rep. John Coghill and Sens. Fred Dyson and Gene Therriault have all sponsored proposed legislation that would require parents to give permission before a teenage girl could legally receive an abortion.

Looking ahead to the upcoming legislative session, Gov. Sarah Palin says it's something she, too, thinks is a good idea.

"Certainly, if we are a society that mandates parental consent before our daughters get their ears pierced, or even take a Tylenol tablet at school, I would think that there would be support both for parents to have to give consent and be informed anyway before such an invasive procedure of an abortion would be performed on our underage daughters also," she said.

Urgent: Novena to stop FOCA from being passed

It started January 11, but I just got the following today (thanks, Jamie) and it's not too late to join!
For those of you who do not know, the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) is set to be signed if congress passes it on January 21-22 of 2009. The FOCA is the next sick chapter in the book of abortion. If made a law then all limitations on abortion will be lifted which will result in the following:

1) All hospitals, including Catholic/Christian hospitals will be required to perform abortions upon request. If this happens Bishops vow to close down all Catholic hospitals, more then 30% of all hospitals in the United States .

2) Partial birth abortions would be legal and have no limitations.

3) All U.S. tax payers would be funding abortions.

4) Parental notification will no longer be required.

Perhaps most importantly the government will now have control in the issue of abortion. This could result in a future amendment that would force women by law to have abortions in certain situations (rape, down syndrome babies, etc) and could even regulate how many children women are allowed to have.

Needless to say this information is disturbing, but sadly true. As Catholics, as Christians, as anyone who is against the needless killing of innocent children, we must stand as one. We must stop this horrific act before it becomes a law.

The Plan:

To say a novena (9 days of prayer) along with fasting starting on January 11th. For Catholics, the prayer of choice will be the rosary with intentions to stop the FOCA. For non Catholics I encourage you to pray your strongest prayers with the same intentions, also for nine consecutive days. The hope is that this will branch and blossom as to become a global effort with maximum impact. We have very little time so we all must act fast. Just do three things:

1) Pass this letter to 5 or more people

2) Do it in three days or less

3) Start the novena on January 11th and pray for nine consecutive days.

(please also fast for at least two days during the novena)

Remember that with God all things are possible and the power of prayer is undeniable. If you are against the senseless killing of defenseless children then the time is now to do something about it!

Family of Afghan rape victim, 14, carry out barbaric forced 'honour' abortion with razor blade and no anaesthetic
The mother and brother of a 14-year-old Afghan rape victim hacked her stomach open with a razor before removing her unborn baby, it emerged today.

After the forced abortion, which was carried out without anaesthetic, the girl stitched up while the five-month-old foetus was taken away and buried.

The barbaric surgery took place in a stable. It has been claimed the family wanted to avenge their honour after the girl was assaulted.

After several days at home, her father took her to hospital where she is in a critical condtion.

Her relatives, who face criminal charges, had claimed she had been bitten by a dog.

A more detailed AP story can be found here:
The girl was in critical condition Friday at Bagram Air Base outside Kabul, having been flown there the night before for treatment, said Capt. Elizabeth Mathias, a spokeswoman for U.S. forces in Afghanistan. Bagram doctors said the girl had been about five months pregnant, and they classified the operation as a "traumatic c-section," according to Mathias.

The abortion was performed about nine days ago, using no anesthesia. The incisions were then stitched up with a thick string usually used to sew up potato sacks, said Gulam Mohammad Nader, one of the doctors who subsequently treated the girl in the provincial capital. He said the wound became dangerously infected.

A former United Nations ambassador, Keyes will speak at American Life League's Training and Activism Week and Personhood Conference at 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 23 at the Liaison Hotel in Washington D.C. during the pro-life movement's largest annual demonstration. Thousands of pro-lifers will descend on the nation's capital for the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that decriminalized abortion.

In the wake of the inauguration of the most pro-abortion president in U.S. history, Ambassador Keyes will speak a message of personhood to a movement determined to battle cultural apathy toward the widespread violation of the right to life of all human beings, born and preborn, and lawmakers' refusal to protect this right.

"For decades, the pro-life movement has been losing focus on the real battle: the dignity of human persons," said Judie Brown, president of American Life League. "The culture of death is gaining ground only because we who should be defending human beings without exception have lost focus of that truth. It's time to turn the tide. It's time for personhood - NOW."

"Dr. Keyes is the perfect speaker to enlighten and ignite passion in the pro-life movement on the integral, inarguable need to restore the legal recognition of personhood," said Brown. "Personhood is the last frontier in the civil rights movement. Dr. Keyes, who has spent a lifetime fighting for civil rights, will provide the inspiration and the motivation needed to herald a return to the fundamental truth: human dignity may never be comrpomised or denied."

Keyes, founder and chairman of the Declaration Foundation, will join keynote speaker Judie Brown; 40 Days for Life leader David Bereit; Kristi Burton, architect of the Colorado personhood movement; Lila Rose, president of Live Action Films; and renowned pro-life blogger Jill Stanek.

The Personhood Conference will conclude American Life League's Training and Activism Week, which will take place Jan. 21-23. For more information, visit www.rockforlife.org.

Red faced and red-handed: Top 10 pro-abortion moments of 2008

Washington, D.C. (7 January 2009) – 2008 was a down year for the pro-abortion movement's talking heads. As you read the quotes below, despite the seriousness of the subject - after all, we are talking about matters of life and death - it's hard not to laugh at their ridiculous attempts to justify their position.

1) NOT THAT! ANYTHING BUT THAT!

Dear leader, President-elect Barack Obama at a town-hall meeting in Johnstown, Pennsylvania in March:
"Look, I got two daughters – 9 years old and 6 years old," he said. "I am going to teach them first about values and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby."
Comment: President-elect Obama demonstrates his disdain for the sanctity of preborn babies by stating that children are "punishments" instead of miracles and blessings.

2) HOLDING OUT FOR A RAISE?

President-elect Barack Obama answers Pastor Rick Warren’s question "At what point does a baby get human rights?" at a Saddleback Church interview:
"Answering that question with specificity is above my pay grade."
Comment: The future president will swear to uphold and defend the Constitution and Bill of Rights - hard to do when you can't decide who gets rights and who doesn’t because it's above your "pay grade."

3) DATE-NIGHT OPTIONS: DINNER? DANCING? ABORTION?

Justin Timberlake/Jessica Biel
"Nobody should be able to say what you can do with your body," Biel told cheering crowds at Last Chance for Change, a rally endorsing presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama. "I give Jess the right to choose where we go to eat all the time," Timberlake added.
Comment: Just when we start to have a sliver of respect for our Hollywood elite, they say something like this. Justin sees no difference between choosing where to eat or which child to kill.

4) KILLING BLACK BABIES – 'UNDERSTANDABLE, UNDERSTANDABLE'

Planned Parenthood of Idaho – A Live Action Films exposé video exposed Planned Parenthood's deep-rooted racism. A caller posed as a potential donor and the following conversation ensued:
Actor: I want to specify that abortion to help a minority group, would that be possible?

Planned Parenthood employee: Absolutely.

Actor: Like the black community for example?

Planned Parenthood employee: Certainly.

Actor: The abortion – I can give money specifically for a black baby, that would be the purpose?

Planned Parenthood employee: Absolutely. If you wanted to designate that your gift be used to help an African-American woman in need, then we would certainly make sure that the gift was earmarked for that purpose.

Actor: Great, because I really faced trouble with affirmative action, and I don’t want my kids to be disadvantaged against black kids. I just had a baby; I want to put it in his name.

Planned Parenthood employee: Yes, absolutely.

Actor: And we don’t, you know we just think, the less black kids out there the better.

Planned Parenthood employee (laughing): Understandable, understandable.
Comment: The apple doesn't fall far. Planned Parenthood hasn't strayed much since the days of its racist founder Margaret Sanger, who once spoke to a Ku Klux Klan group and was a member of the American Eugenics Society.

5) HEY LOOK, MOM, HERESY!

Ca. Rep. Nancy Pelosi in a television interview with NBC's Tom Brokaw:
Tom Brokaw: Madame speaker, when does life begin?
Rep. Pelosi: As an ardent, practicing Catholic, ...I don't think anybody can tell you when life begins.
Comment: That's like saying, "As a vegan, I would like my steak medium rare."

6) BEING 'PRO-CURE' IS BEING PRO-LIFE! ... EVEN IF WE HAVE TO CANNIBALIZE PREBORN CHILDREN FOR IT

Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm in support of Proposition 2, a bill that now allows embryonic stem cell research:
"As a Catholic, I can say to be pro-cure is to be pro-life."
Comment: What about this statement is Catholic? Not a thing.

7) FIVE-FINGERED DISCOUNT FOR PLANNED PARENTHOOD C.E.O.

PP C.E.O. Miriam Inocencio
Despite a six-digit salary drawn from Planned Parenthood's tax- and abortion-gorged pockets, Planned Parenthood of Rhode Island CEO Miriam Inocencio must have really liked that Macy’s blouse!
Comment: Clearly her day job – helping to kill preborn babies – has affected her moral judgment. If Miriam is hurting for cash, perhaps we can redirect some of Planned Parenthood's extra Title X taxpayer funding her way?

8) MODERN CHIVALRY

Comedian Doug Stanhope
These are not empty words. I, Doug Stanhope, am offering you, Bristol Palin, the sum of $25,000 so that you can abort your child and move out of that draconian home. I have also set up a PayPal link so that others around the world can help increase this amount to ease the burden of starting out on your own at such an early age.
Comment: We love it when pro-abortion radicals show their true colors. Stanhope can't fathom why a young couple would actually want their baby. Nope. Clearly, Bristol doesn't need love and compassion – she needs $25,000!

9) MORE THAN WE CAN SAY FOR SOME POLITICIANS

South Carolina Democrat chair Carol Fowler
Vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's "primary qualification seems to be that she hasn't had an abortion."
Comment: South Carolinians overwhelmingly voted for the Palin ticket. That's got to hurt, Fowler.

10) KEEP IT CLASSY, OLD BOY

Comedian Bill Maher
Refers to Sarah Palin's Down syndrome baby as "it" three times in a monologue citing why she isn't qualified to be vice president and then ends with "Does anyone in that party understand the concept of pulling out?"

Comment: What can we say, really? Well just let Maher condemn himself.

Dead baby thrown out with hospital's trash
"It's like they treated my son like he's nothing," said Kalynn Moore, the 26-year-old mother. "It hurts so bad."

Moore gave birth to Bashere Davon Moyd Jr. at Christ Hospital on Dec. 21, about a month before her due date. Her cousin Nicia Royster said she went with a nurse that day to place the corpse into the hospital's morgue.

Hospital officials went to Moore's Jersey City home on Jan. 2 and told her that a funeral home had come to pick up the remains, but they could not be found.

Police say the body was discarded in the trash, but they do not know when. The hospital has not officially said the baby was thrown in the trash but didn't dispute the police statement.

A spokeswoman for Christ Hospital said the institution is praying for the baby's family. But the family and the hospital disagree over whether Bashere was born alive.

Hospital spokeswoman Barbara Davey said in a statement that the baby was stillborn.

Moore, who has a 5-year-old son, said at a news conference Tuesday at her lawyer's office that she was in and out of consciousness in the minutes after the 5-pound boy was born. But she says the baby was born alive and that she held him briefly before doctors spent more than 20 minutes trying to stabilize the baby's heart rate before he died.

Ironman triathlete Michael Hennessey races for attention for Trisomy children
"So many people think that these children are 'defective,'" Hennessey told NRL News. "But if you know one of these children you can see they are just love. They've inspired me to do more than talk about it, to make sacrifices and show my support."

Woman's abortion experience leads to redemption, help for other women
"I was willing to pay the extra bucks to be put to sleep. I didn't want to experience the ugly clinic, but go on with my life." After dropping her child off at daycare, she headed to one of Tampa's nicest women’s hospitals, planning to retrieve her son that afternoon.

"The next thing I remember was waking up with a tube stuck down my throat from a respirator and my parents standing at the foot of my bed. My secret wasn't a secret anymore." They picked up her son while she checked out of the hospital to recover at her apartment.

However, an allergic reaction to anesthesia sent her back to the hospital as she began running a high fever. There she learned that parts of the fetus had been left behind and the doctor would need to re-perform the abortion.

"What parts? A head, a heart, arms or legs? For the first time when he said those words I realized it was the parts of a child - a living human being that I had fought for the right to destroy."

After crawling off the abortion table a second time, Layton spent the next seven years with no idea of who she was. "I was lost to my feelings, any self-esteem I might possibly have had, and lost any values."[..]

Three years with a secular counselor only served to empty her pockets of the dollars she had to spare. As her marriage and life continued to fall apart, she turned to a neighborhood church where her children could attend Sunday School.

"As I was watching them perform an Easter play, the true resurrection happened in my life," Layton said.

Minnesota priest urge not to fight FOCA; came under fire
"Our nation and new president will be challenged by ongoing wars, an economy in severe recession, ballooning deficits, high unemployment and an environment and health care system in crisis," wrote the Rev. Michael Tegeder of St. Edward’s Church in Bloomington. "Yet at this very moment the Catholic bishops have declared that they have this more pressing need."

Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano publishes article detailing birth control pill as cause of abortion and cancer
Pedro José María Simón Castellví, the president of FIAMC, wrote that "the means of contraception violate at least five important rights: the right to life, the right to health, the right to education, all right to information (their spread is at the expense of information on natural resources) and the right to equality between the sexes (the burden of contraception falls mostly on women)."

"Curiously," Castelvi wrote, this information on the abortifacient effect of the Pill "does not reach the general public," despite being well-known to researchers.

The hundred-page report, published in German, is an analysis of scientific data on the effects of the Pill and includes three hundred bibliographic citations, mostly from specialized medical journals.

The report "clearly demonstrates" that an ovulant, low-dose hormonal birth control pills work not only by preventing ovulation but also by causing the death of an already existing child in the uterine wall. This embryonic person, Castellvi wrote, "even in its early days, is something other than an egg or female germ cell." From the embryonic stage, the child grows in a coordinated way and this development, unless prevented, "ends with its exit from the womb in nine months, ready to devour a litre of milk."

The report also notes that the International Agency for Research of Cancer, an agency of the World Health Organization, reported in July 2005 that the oral preparations of combined estrogen-progestogens common in birth control pills are classified in a group of carcinogenic agents.

Some Latina women are using drugs or potentially harmful home methods to end their pregnancies, the New York Times reveals
"There are scary moments, and you got to have a friend right next to you," said Ms. Dominguez, now 30 and a mother of four. "It's cheap but dangerous. Certain people are more delicate than others. But afterwards, I felt relief."

A friend of Ms. Dominguez's said her stepsister took the pills last year because she was in the country illegally, and worried that a doctor might turn her in. "She was just scared," the woman said, speaking on the condition that her name not be published to protect the stepsister’s privacy. "She had no papers, no insurance, no nothing."

The woman went to a free clinic afterward to make sure the pills had worked (they had). Health care workers and other community leaders say such visits are how they discovered widespread illicit use of the drug as well as homemade potions.

Dr. Rosing said he learned about Cytotec during his residency at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia hospital in Washington Heights, where he saw a lot of Dominican immigrants with incomplete abortions in the emergency room. They spoke of taking the "star pill," a nickname for the hexagonal shape of one form of misoprostol. He suspected "that has to be the tip of the iceberg," he said, "and it was."

The pills allow pregnant women a degree of denial over what is taking place. Like Ms. Dominguez, many women in the neighborhood talk about the need to bring on — or "down" — their periods, not abortion. Afterward, they might tell doctors or relatives they had lost the baby.

New Arizona governor could mean new chance for abortion legislation
During the last legislative session, Rep. Andy Tobin, R-Paulden, sponsored a bill that among other things would have increased penalties for those who perform a type of late-term abortion sometimes characterized as "partial birth."

HB 2769 passed both houses of the Legislature, drawing opposition from most Democrats. Janet Napolitano, a Democrat, vetoed it, as she has other legislation seeking abortion restrictions.

Tobin said he's planning to introduce the same bill during the upcoming session. And he expects sponsors of some other abortion-related legislation vetoed by Napolitano to do the same.

"I believe the people of Arizona were for some of the bills she vetoed," Tobin said. "And I do not see a problem in resubmitting the same bill without any change if it is something I think the people want."
