Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh described the widespread practice of aborting female fetuses as a "national shame" and called for stricter enforcement of laws devised to prevent doctors from helping parents to avoid the birth of unwanted daughters"No nation, no society, no community can hold its head high and claim to be part of the civilized world if it condones the practice of discriminating against one half of humanity represented by women," Mr. Singh said, giving an inaugural speech at a national conference dedicating to "saving the girl child," which brought together politicians, doctors and advocates.
Describing female feticide as "inhuman, uncivilized and reprehensible," he said the government had a responsibility to crack down on the large numbers of Indian doctors who illegally reveal the sex of the fetus to the parents, and then arrange abortions to get rid of unwanted girls.

There is no right to kill a child, says Mexico's Fundacion Vida leader "We cannot give priority to a supposed hedonist freedom, to the deceitful labyrinth of the right of a woman over her own body, over the right to life, which is the source of all others. Students punished for wearing pro-life shirtsThe T-shirts read, "Abortion is homicide." The students wore the shirts on April 21 to mark the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in the U.S.
"We were told we could take the shirts off, turn them inside out or face a two-day suspension," says senior Kristen Norman. The students say they felt so strongly, they were willing to face the consequences until the school district began adding on more punishments.
"We were told we would not be able to go to our senior prom, would not be able to participate in senior skip days, go to a senior picnic or walk at graduation," Norman says.

"If (Obama) supports abortion, which is a scourge of our community, which is devastating our community, then we cannot, we must not, support him," Broden added.
Broden was joined by other black pastors, leaders, and community and youth activists at the event, which was organized by Students for Life of America.

Women tell of coerced, illegal abortions at Tiller's late-term abortion mill"These are heart-breaking stories for which we hold Governor Kathleen Sebelius personally responsible," said Operation Rescue Senior Policy Advisor Cheryl Sullenger. "The governor has appointed people to all the state’s enforcement institutions that continue to turn a blind eye to lawbreaking and unethical behavior on the part of the abortion cartel. She is at the heart of the abortion corruption scandal in Kansas that has already cost the jobs of an attorney general and two top members of the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts. Unfortunately, that is just the tip of the iceberg." You can read the testimonies here

Justice Antonin Scalia: Constitution neither allows legal abortions nor does it prohibit themDuring the "60 Minutes" interview with correspondent Lesley Stahl of CBS, Scalia said the Constitution is silent on the issue of abortion.
He said he favors overturning Roe v. Wade, which has ushered in 35 years of unlimited abortions, but says states aren't forced to ban abortions if the case is reversed.
"On the abortion thing, for example, if indeed I were ... trying to impose my own views, I would not only be opposed to Roe versus Wade, I would be in favor of the opposite view, which the anti-abortion people would like to see adopted, which is to interpret the Constitution to mean that a state must prohibit abortion," Scalia said.
"And you're against that?" Stahl asked to clarify his remarks.
Scalia replied, "Of course. There's nothing" in the Constitution supporting the view.

Yale official: Scientific test found no traces of human blood in Aliza Shvarts' art studioThe disclosure came after The New Haven Register reported Wednesday - citing an unnamed source - that Shvarts' art project itself had been tested and came up negative for human blood. The official said that report was inaccurate.
The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the official is not authorized to speak publicly about the test.
Reached by telephone Wednesday, Shvarts declined to comment.
The finding raises questions about whether Shvarts actually inseminated herself and induced miscarriages for her senior project, which was originally scheduled to go on display Tuesday. Shvarts had repeatedly asserted to the News that the art installation contains blood gathered from her supposed miscarriages over the last nine months - a claim the test results contradict.
In a tour of her studio last Thursday, Shvarts' showed two News reporters video footage that she claimed would be included in the final piece. The footage showed Shvarts sitting in a shower stall for hours before moaning and bleeding into a cup. The blood, Shvarts said, was later collected and frozen.

Wisconsin mom opens home to save a childTears are in Suzanne Nelson's eyes.
Sun is shining through the windows of her Whitefish Bay home. On the couch, her husband Eric of 15 years is playing with their youngest daughter, Margaret Mary, 11 months. Nelson is quietly singing, "I will walk by faith, even when I cannot see," as Christian artist Jeremy Camp plays in the background.
For Nelson, 42, it is the soundtrack for her life.
"God is with me everywhere I go," she said. "I'm aware he's with me. I feel nothing but God's presence in my life. It's not about keeping up with everyone else. I'm going to blaze my own trail. God wants us to help each other. If you're listening, God prepares you for what he wants you to do."
That preparation has led Nelson to become a voice for the unborn.
"It's one thing to say, 'You should do the right thing, you should keep your baby,'" Nelson said. "It's another thing to say, 'I'll help you.'"
Help for these expectant mothers comes in the work Nelson does with Holy Family Parish, Whitefish Bay, and its respect life advocacy and respect life committee, helping to plan a chili dinner, Mother's Day rose sale, ice cream social and baby shower for the unborn. For Nelson, the end to abortion must come through peace and love.
"I don't think God wants us to point our fingers at each other," Nelson said. "We all know it’s immoral. We know it's horrible. Why not help (pregnant mothers)? I mean peacefully, lovingly do something. If God is love then we have to lovingly educate one misguided soul at a time."

Yale to pull Aliza Shvarts's controversial "abortion art" project from an exhibition Tuesday unless she admits she lied about artificially inseminating herself and inducing miscarriages to produce the piece

Well, the tribe has spoken: Yale student's 'abortion art' jeopardizes reproductive choiceShvarts' stupid, stupid callousness has nothing to do with why women fought so hard for choice. Gerri Santoro is the reason, and Shvarts would have better served choice and reproductive rights had she not pushed the envelope in a way that no one on either side of the debate could morally support. [...]
Aliza Shvarts does not have the right to disregard any of our hard-won right reproductive freedoms. By doing so, she spits in the face of every woman who has ever fought for, lived because of, or died before Roe v. Wade.

Yale's Aliza Shvarts has released a statement defending her work: For the past year, I performed repeated self-induced miscarriages. I created a group of fabricators from volunteers who submitted to periodic STD screenings and agreed to their complete and permanent anonymity. From the 9th to the 15th day of my menstrual cycle, the fabricators would provide me with sperm samples, which I used to privately self-inseminate. Using a needleless syringe, I would inject the sperm near my cervix within 30 minutes of its collection, so as to insure the possibility of fertilization. On the 28th day of my cycle, I would ingest an abortifacient, after which I would experience cramps and heavy bleeding. More here

From Students for Life of America: Yale says senior art project exploiting abortion was fake Forced abortion on display at senior art show now said to be Fake by Yale officialsThis evening Helaine Klasky, a Yale University Spokesperson, stated, "Ms. Shvarts is engaged in performance art. Her art project includes visual representations, a press release and other narrative materials. She stated to three senior Yale University officials today, including two deans, that she did not impregnate herself and that she did not induce any miscarriages. The entire project is an art piece, a creative fiction designed to draw attention to the ambiguity surrounding form and function of a woman's body. She is an artist and has the right to express herself through performance art. Had these acts been real, they would have violated basic ethical standards and raised serious mental and physical health concerns." Read it here Kristan Hawkins, Executive Director of SFLA, responded to the statement, "I am appalled that Yale University would allow a student to use the tragedy of miscarriage and abortion as a practical joke and then call it 'art.' If a male art student would have released that he planned to exhibit condoms he used to rape multiple women in an effort to produce shock, the American people and pro-choice feminist groups across the country would have demanded that the student apologize for his grotesque behavior and be severely reprimanded or expelled from school. In fact, I doubt that Yale senior project professor would have even allowed the project to continue in the first place. Falsely announcing that one has taken several lives is unethical, and this girl has inflicted serious harm to the women of this country who have experienced the pain of miscarriage."

Students for Life of America on Yale senior abortion "art": April 17, 2008 - Yale senior, Aliza Shvarts ,artificially inseminated herself several times in order to have multiple abortions for her "art" project.
The April 17th edition of Yale Daily News reports that senior Aliza Shvarts' "art" show is slated to begin next Tuesday, on April 29th. It features a documentation of a nine-month process in which Shvarts artificially inseminated herself multiple times and used abortifacients to induce multiple abortions while filming the process. The exhibit will display the videos of her abortions as well as blood samples from the process. According to Shvarts, the goal of her art exhibit is to "spark conversation and debate on the relationship between art and the human body."
"Why did the school officials and advisors not intervene with Shvarts' project?" Kristan Hawkins, SFLA Executive Director asked. "By letting Shvarts to complete her 'art' project, Yale allowed Shvarts to put herself in serious medical risk. The student even remarked in the article that she did not see the need in consulting a physician prior to self-abortions because everything she used was legal."
"I call on Planned Parenthood, NARAL, NOW and all other so-called pro-choice groups to condemn this. Abortion should never be trivialized as a matter of 'art.'"
"Shvarts' art project trivializes the pain many women feel when they experience miscarriages. She is recreating a natural tragedy for her own personal gain without regard for her children or herself,' concluded Hawkins.
In the Yale article, Shvarts stated that she was not ashamed of the exhibition and has become "increasingly comfortable" discussing the miscarriage in common, everyday conversation.
"I feel that she is manipulating life for the benefit of her art, and I definitely don't support it. I think it's morally wrong," said Yale University Class of 2009 student Jonathon Serrato in the Yale Daily News.

Yale student impregnates herself, has multiple abortions for "art" projectThe goal in creating the art exhibition, Shvarts said, was to spark conversation and debate on the relationship between art and the human body. But her project has already provoked more than just debate, inciting, for instance, outcry at a forum for fellow senior art majors held last week. And when told about Shvarts' project, students on both ends of the abortion debate have expressed shock - saying the project does everything from violate moral code to trivialize abortion.
But Shvarts insists her concept was not designed for "shock value."
"I hope it inspires some sort of discourse," Shvarts said. "Sure, some people will be upset with the message and will not agree with it, but it's not the intention of the piece to scandalize anyone."[..]
The display of Schvarts' project will feature a large cube suspended from the ceiling of a room in the gallery of Green Hall. Schvarts will wrap hundreds of feet of plastic sheeting around this cube; lined between layers of the sheeting will be the blood from Schvarts' self-induced miscarriages mixed with Vaseline in order to prevent the blood from drying and to extend the blood throughout the plastic sheeting.
Schvarts will then project recorded videos onto the four sides of the cube. These videos, captured on a VHS camcorder, will show her experiencing miscarriages in her bathrooom tub, she said. Similar videos will be projected onto the walls of the room.

Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry vetoes bill that requires women considering an abortion to undergo an ultrasound examination"While I support reasonable restrictions on abortion, this legislation does not provide an essential exemption for victims of rape and incest," Henry said in his veto message to the Legislature.

Pope Benedict XVI knows first-hand what happens when a society refuses to defend the most defenseless; cousin had Down's Syndrome and was taken by the Nazis As a boy of fourteen, Joseph Ratzinger had a cousin who had been born with Down's Syndrome, only a bit younger than himself. In 1941, German state "therapists" came to the boy's house and probably informed the parents of the government regulation that prohibited mentally handicapped children from remaining in their parents' home. In spite of the family's pleas, the representatives of the Nazi state took the child away. The Ratzinger family never saw him again. Later the family learned that he had "died," most likely murdered, for being "undesirable," a blemish in the race and a drain on the productivity of the nation. This was Joseph Ratzinger's first experience of a murderous philosophy that asserts that some people are disposable. Hat tip: Leticia

Teens found guilty of assaulting a pregnant woman and killing her unborn child The two-week trial in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court wrapped up Monday morning with Assistant Hamilton County Prosecutor Rick Gibson summarizing what happened to lead to the beating on July 11.
Gibson said 18-year-old Kerria Anderson told Price she was pregnant with his child. Price learned he and Anderson were cousins and urged her to have an abortion. Anderson refused.
That's when the teens planned to beat Anderson until she lost the child, Gibson said.
Tests later revealed Price wasn't the father, but that wasn't until months after the attack.
The boys lured Anderson to an Over-the-Rhine apartment, where they kicked, beat and stomped her. Anderson went into labor and the baby was stillborn, Gibson said.
"There is no question she was brutally beaten the night of July 11, 2007," Gibson told jurors. There is no question that during that brutal beating, the baby she was carrying was killed, he said.

Mother of Massachusetts woman who died from botched legal abortion says more states need Right to Know laws that give women full informed consentEileen Smith, Laura's mother, now says that states need to do a better job of telling women of the medical dangers associated with an abortion.
She told The Anchor newspaper she's upset that Massachusetts lawmakers once again rejected a bill to give women the information and put in place a law that is similar to others in 30 states.
“It is such a miscarriage of justice that this bill is continually rejected,” Smith said. “I truly believe that had it been passed before last September, my daughter would still be with us today.”
“The undeniable evidence is mounting that informed consent bills only help women,” Smith told the Catholic newspaper.
“No other medical procedure besides abortion is so legally shrouded under such a veil of secrecy. Once again our legislators have turned a blind eye and deaf ear to the plight of the unborn and the suffering of women," she said.

Judie Brown: Avon + UNIFEM = Culture of deathAvon has established its new Empowerment Fund to end violence against women and is urging patrons to purchase a bracelet that "could change the world."
Reese Witherspoon, honorary chair of the Avon Foundation, was "very excited" to introduce Avon’s first global charity product, a silver tone infinity symbol on a blue stretch cord, designed to "save and improve women’s lives worldwide."
Proceeds from sales of the bracelet will be deposited in the Empowerment Fund and the first $500,000 will be matched by the Avon Foundation for a total donation of $1 million to UNIFEM.
It all sounds well and good—until one takes a closer look at UNIFEM.
UNIFEM is the United Nations Development Fund for Women. Established in 1976, it is self-described as "fostering women’s empowerment and gender equality" and helping to make the "voices of women heard at the United Nations."
Two international agreements form the framework for UNIFEM's mission and goals: the Beijing Platform for Action and the Convention on the Elimination for All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.
The Beijing Platform for Action was the result of the Fourth World Conference on Women held in September of 1995 in Beijing, China. It is a wide-ranging plan for promoting and protecting women’s human rights worldwide. Adopted by 197 governments, it addresses twelve "critical" areas of concern, not the least of which is "Women and Health."
The United States has, in years since, been consistently criticized by feminist organizations for failing to actually affirm the platform, ridiculed for adhering to an anti-abortion stance and denounced for opposing gender quotas in political participation.
CEDAW, created in 1979, is actually a global Equal Rights Amendment. The preamble of this treaty states, "A change in the traditional role of men as well as the role of women in society and in the family is needed to achieve full equality between men and women."
CEDAW mandates gender re-education, access to abortion services, homosexual and lesbian rights and the legalization of "voluntary" prostitution as a valid form of professional employment.

Birth control pill linked to hardening of arteries, new study in Belgium finds Researchers at the University of Ghent, conducting a long-term study on 1,300 healthy women aged 35 to 55 living in a small town in Belgium, have observed that those women who take oral contraceptives may have more plaque (a hard, fatty deposit) buildup in their arteries.
Atherosclerotic plaque is comprised of cholesterol, bacteria and calcium which adheres to the inner lining of arteries.
Approximately 81% of participants had taken birth control pills for at least a year at some point in their lives, and 27% were currently taking the contraceptives.
The researchers conducted ultrasound examinations of the participants' leg and neck arteries to measure levels of plaque buildup. Every 10 years of oral contraceptive use was correlated with a 20 to 30% increase in plaque buildup.
According to lead researcher Ernst Rietzschel, this amount of plaque buildup is cause for concern because of increased risk of heart disease and stroke, and the study indicates a need to conduct new investigation into the safety of oral contraceptives.
"It's incredible that a drug which has been taken by 80% of women ... is almost bereft of any long-term outcome safety data," Rietzschel said in a NaturalNews report.

Pregnancy centers defeat legislation in Maryland that sought to disparage the work of pregnancy centers and deter women from going to pregnancy centers for helpHB 1146 and SB 690 were initiated by NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland and would have forced pregnancy centers to provide a disclaimer to all clients upon first contact. The disclaimer would have said, among other things, that "we are not required to provide medically accurate information." If approved, the disclaimer would defy the very purpose of pregnancy centers -- to empower women with accurate information about abortion risks and abortion alternatives so they can make an informed choice.
Both bills received hearings in the Senate Finance and the House Health and Government Operations committees. Care Net led a coalition of pregnancy centers, former clients, medical professionals, research experts, attorneys, organization leaders and local officials -- 48 in all -- who testified against the bills in both chambers.
As of April 7, the legislature has adjourned and the legislation was defeated, having never received a vote.

Illinois woman says priest coerced her abortionIn her complaint, Holly Force claims Szydlik began pursuing a relationship with her in 2004 while she attended a church in Peoria, where he was working.
The complaint states the Forces later left Peoria and moved to Edwardsville to distance themselves from Szydlik, but he also began living in Edwardsville in 2006.
Holly Force's complaint alleges that she and the priest had sex in April 2006 that was "nonconsensual on her part" and resulted in pregnancy. When she told Szydlik the following month that she was pregnant, he told her he wanted to leave the priesthood and marry her, according to the complaint. But in July 2006, Szydlik told her he wanted to remain a priest, and that "if there is not a baby, there is not a problem," the complaint states.
Force alleges she had an abortion in July 2006 "due to coercion by Szydlik," according to the complaint. It claims the priest manipulated her by telling her their actions were "God's intent."

14-year-old girl drowns newborn baby in school toiletBaytown police said the eighth-grade student delivered the near full-term baby at Cedar Bayou Junior High School, located at 2600 Elvinta, on Wednesday morning while she was alone.
The baby was born alive, investigators said.
"We understand that the baby was alive when it was born and that the girl attempted to flush the child down the toilet. The child died as a result of these actions," said Lt. Eric Freed of the Baytown Police Department.
Another student who walked into the restroom heard the baby crying and ran to get the nurse and assistant principal. But by the time they arrived, officials said, it was too late. Hat tip: Jill Stanek

Pro-abortion lawmaker reintroduces bill targeting CPCsSen. Robert Menendez alleges the centers mislead women by giving them information on abortion's risks and alternatives.
The so-called "Stop Deceptive Advertising for Women's Services Act" would place burdensome regulations on pregnancy centers.
It would also force the Federal Trade Commission to create and enforce rules to prohibit deceptive practices that pregnancy centers say they never use to reach women -- such as advertising under the "abortion services" section of the phone book.
