I woke up to the sound of the kids, and then Kin was singing 'Happy Birthday' over the phone, and the messages started pouring in. Chad said sorry he can't be here. There is no cake but that's okay because I could do without the extra calories. Heh. All I really want right now is a huge cheeseburger. And endless drink-until-you-puke supply of banana smoothie from Dome's. Or that nice little cafe in Bangkok. Hmm.
So. Muaks to those who remembered. And happy 31st to me!

Haleigh Poutre... " persistent vegetative state
On Tuesday, Spence said, he went to Haleigh's room at Baystate and noticed a quiet brown-haired girl lying in bed. In front of her, he said, there were three objects: a yellow duck, a Curious George stuffed animal, and a yellow block. He said a DSS social worker accompanied him, and she said, "Haleigh, this is Harry."
"Give him the yellow duck," the social worker said, according to Spence's recollection.
Haleigh picked up the yellow duck, he said.
"Where's Curious George?" the social worker asked Haleigh.
Haleigh then picked up the stuffed animal, Spence said.

Pro-choice is a lie, Babies never choose to die
Needless to say, the masses of young people that marched on Washington in support of women, life, and some radical notion called responsibility are probably giving Eleanor Smeal hot flashes. But then again, men don't have them, so Eleanor, as a rule, doesn't either. The nation has undeniably shifted to the pro-life side of the issue as medicine and science have advanced and improved. Any biologist will now testify that life begins at conception. Most physicians, with the exception of those who work for Planned Parenthood, will tell you that the heart begins beating three weeks after conception, which is before most people even know they are pregnant. But it doesn't matter. To the feminist, pro-choice minority, only people who can speak and think are human. So, according to them, all of us are crying, babbling flesh blobs for the first 18 months of our postnatal lives.

|You Are a Visionary Soul|
You are a curious person, always in a state of awareness.
Connected to all things spiritual, you are very connected to your soul.
You are wise and bright: able to reason and be reasonable.
Occasionally, you get quite depressed and have dark feelings.
You have great vision and can be very insightful.
In fact, you are often profound in a way that surprises yourself.
Visionary souls like you can be the best type of friend.
You are intuitive, understanding, sympathetic, and a good healer.

Inevitably, attacking abortion as a great evil means attacking providers and patients. If abortion is so bad, why not stigmatize the doctors who perform them? Deny the clinic a permit in your town? Make women feel guilty and ashamed for choosing it and make them sweat so they won't screw up again? Ironically, improvements in contraception have made unwanted pregnancy look more like a personal failing. "Why was I so careful? Because I never wanted to have an abortion," wrote 32-year-old Laurie Gigliotti in response to Saletan's op-ed, describing her super-vigilant approach to safe sex. You can just see how unwanted pregnancy will join obesity and smoking as unacceptable behavior in polite society. But how is all this censoriousness supposed to help women control their fertility? If half of all pregnancies are unplanned, it doesn't make sense to treat them as individual sins.

The 1973 Roe v. Wade decision made by the Supreme Court was arguably the worst abuse of judicial power ever committed
in America, says Joe Mariani
The Left's biggest fear is that Judge Sam Alito, if confirmed to the Supreme Court, will overturn Roe v. Wade. The ruling could only be overturned if a state abortion ban like the one proposed in Ohio is challenged by pro-abortion groups, and comes before the Supreme Court. Even if the Court does overturn it, the only effect would be to return the abortion decision to the states, where it belongs. When that happens, the damage done to the Constitution in 1973 will be healed, and the debate over the fate of unborn children can begin in earnest, instead of being suppressed by fictional constitutional "rights."

Sleep problems linked to abortion trauma
A new study published in Sleep
, the official journal of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies, has found that women who experienced abortion were more likely to be treated for sleep disorders or disturbances compared to women who gave birth.
The researchers, David Reardon of the Springfield, Ill.-based Elliot Institute and Priscilla Coleman of the University of Bowling Green, examined medical records for 56,284 low-income women in California who gave birth or underwent an abortion in the first six months of 1989. Researchers examined data for medical treatment for these women from July 1988 to June 1994 and excluded women who had been treated for sleep disturbances or disorders in the 12 to 18 months prior to abortion or delivery.
The findings showed that, up to four years following abortion or delivery, women who underwent abortions were more likely to be treated for sleep disorders following an induced abortion compared to a birth. The difference was greatest during the first 180 days after the end of the pregnancy, when aborting women were approximately twice as likely to seek treatment for sleep disorders. Significant differences between aborting and child bearing women persisted for three years.
Numerous studies have shown that trauma victims will often experience sleep difficulties. The authors believe their findings support a growing consensus that some women may have traumatic reactions to abortion.

The New York Times calls for a filibuster of Judge Alito
Senate Democrats, who presented a united front against the nomination of Judge Alito in the Judiciary Committee, seem unwilling to risk the public criticism that might come with a filibuster - particularly since there is very little chance it would work. Judge Alito's supporters would almost certainly be able to muster the 60 senators necessary to put the nomination to a final vote.
A filibuster is a radical tool. It's easy to see why Democrats are frightened of it. But from our perspective, there are some things far more frightening. One of them is Samuel Alito on the Supreme Court.

Against abortion but pro-choice?
Regarding the "pro-choice" argument, our beloved late Pope John Paul II stated, "Anyone can see that the alternative here is only apparent. It is not possible to speak of the right to choose when a clear moral evil is involved, when what is at stake is the commandment, 'Do not kill!'"

The pro-life movement teaches the 100 percent guarantee against unwanted pregnancies, which is abstinence. However, Planned Parenthood refuses to teach this responsible way to avoid pregnancies, and instead gives more reasons for teens to be irresponsible and fornicate.
I know that I am incredibly fortunate that my biological parents decided to spare my life by not killing me. Instead of abortion, they chose to put me up for adoption, which is also found missing from the pro-death teaching curriculum. Instead, pro-abortion groups would rather kill babies who would have otherwise become fruitful and productive human beings.

There is really no other "choice" where 'choice' is concerned, or is there?
One of my readers, David, responded to a story I posted
last week about a girl who seemed sure that she wants an abortion (she's not even sure if she's pregnant yet). David didn't feel like he could remain silent, so he left a message (damn, I should have copied the message!) on the forum, urging the girl not to have an abortion if she is indeed pregnant. Sadly however, David told me today that his message has been deleted by the moderator and he has been banned from the forum. (Apparently also, pro-lifers are not allowed in that community)
If you read the userinfo, pro-lifers are not allowed on this community unless they ask the moderators first for permission. The reason for this rule is that most pro-lifers, like you, have proven unable to abide by the community rules (NO PRESSURE ALLOWED).
(How lame is that? Anyways..) He shares with me
his email response to the moderator:
Sorry you feel threatened by those who only offer a woman options and hope. Pro-aborts like yourself, fear the truth getting out to women who are afraid, confused, and don't know where to turn. So much so, that you even had to delete my post that could have given this girl another perspective, from those who have gone through abortion. You aren't pro-choice, you are pro-abortion. You deny this? Well, then I can just as legitimately claim to be pro-choice as you, and therefore allowed to post comments on this list. I'm pro-choice. I choose life. What gives lie to your claim of being "pro-choice," is that you don't want women to have information about the other choice, the choice for life. You've been lied to for so long by the abortion industry, (and yes, I do mean industry, as in big business) that you believe the lies of abortion. The truth of the matter is that in many, many cases, the girl/woman has no choice. Quite often the pressure, that you claim to be so worried about, comes from boyfriends/husbands/peers/parents to abort. How about Christin Gilbert, where was her choice? Never heard of her? Read on,:
She had no choice. She died at the hands of one who provides "choice." Too damned concerned about themselves, to get this poor girl any real medical help that could have saved her life. Where is NOW for Miss Gilbert? Is this what pro-aborts mean when they claim to care about women? You claim to not want pro-lifers to post on your forum, because you think we will pressure her. I guess you call it "affirmation" when you abortion supporters tell her that it is ok, or in your case, tell her that it is very safe, when I'm sure Christin Gilbert would disagree with you. By not allowing women to get all the information, such as the possibility of physical/emotional problems that can result, and not giving her information on fetal development, you do them a great disservice. It's a shame you don't seem to see this. I hope one day you will.

"Abusing the filibuster rule is immoral because it requires lying about what is being done. A filibuster in this case would mean denying the American people a vote through their senators. Opponents of the President and his nominee should say so honestly by simply voting No. Anything else is disingenuous and therefore immoral."

Sorry. Nope. Bottom line: that may well be a human being in there, but it's an awfully TINY one, and I'm going to have to lower the boom. I don't wish to house and feed it for 9 months, let alone 18 years; for reasons whose details are my OWN and NO ONE else's to examine, dissect, judge or measure, I do not wish to carry this potential human being to term. Thusly, I will make my medical decision and MURDER it, if you want to use that term.

A little more honesty
What is dishonest is the repetition of the sickening trope that choice is the surpassing good where a mother is concerned. In an era within living memory - that might be distant antiquity for the likes of Sarah - certain things were taken as intrinsic goods and surpassing values of their own: wartime patriotism; many children; a mother's enduring defense and love for her own. The cultural left has abandoned all these things in favor of an ethos best summarized as do what thou wilt , or do what ye will. That these are word for word the putative first principles of the modern apings of paganism and worse is hardly coincidental. A mother's first claim now is not to the fulfillment of her motherhood but to the ability to annihilate it. It is an immense power - the reversal of time's arrow, the un-becoming, the satiation of the demands of circumstance and convenience - purchased only at the price of a life.

Roe Babies and Reagan Babies
Reagan Babies don't see abortion as liberation. "When I was their age, I thought abortion meant liberation for women," boomer ex-radical feminist Frederica Mathewes-Green wrote. "For them, abortion means violence against children. The meaning of abortion is changing, and as it does, minds change as well. It's not surprising that this change would begin with the young. After all, it is their generation that is under attack: anyone under the age of twenty-eight could have been killed this way. A fourth of their generation was." So it's not just another political issue for Reagan Babies; it is a matter of life and death. Sarah McKalips of the pro-life group Rock for Life says that youth "don't see abortion as just a women's rights issue, they also see it as a human rights issue."
Many of the faces I saw when I went to the annual March for Life in the nation's capital a couple years ago were young and vibrant. Young marchers wore T-shirts printed by Rock for Life that read, "You will not silence my message. You will not mock my God. You will stop killing my generation."
Reagan Babies are standing up for Roe Babies. Slowly, young Americans are helping to rebuild a culture of life. Doing so means more than merely overturning Roe v. Wade - it means that hearts and minds must be changed. Soon, we must pray, they will stop killing our generation.

is an initiative for those who care about women (whether they are pro-life, pro-choice or in the middle) to make themselves available to women in need. It's goal is to help (rather than re-create) existing efforts by letting women in difficult circumstances know where to turn, and those who are willing to help know what to do. Wear the symbol with purple background if you are available to help women who find themselves pregnant, who want to avoid an abortion and need help. Wear the symbol with the black background if you have been through abortion yourself and are available to help another recover from it.

British mother loses 'right to know' case
Mr Justice Silber ruled that Ms Axon, who has five children - or any other parent - had no right to know unless the child decided otherwise.
He said he would not change the law as Ms Axon's lawyers had requested. Lawyers for the health secretary, Patricia Hewitt, had fought the legal challenge.
The judge added that to force a girl to tell her parents "may lead her to make a decision that she later regrets or seek the assistance of an unofficial abortionist".
During a recent hearing, Sue Axon had said she had been prompted to make the legal challenge after a termination she had 20 years ago resulted in "guilt, shame and depression for many years".
Lawyers for Ms Axon, who had launched the proceedings more than a year ago, had emphasised that her teenage daughters, 16-year-old Joy and Amber, 13, had not sought abortions and that she was bringing the case "as a matter of principle".

In memory of all the lost children, fallen sisters and those who have been maimed by abortion
I sit across from a playground that I visited this eve with a small child.
I know of such places where children play.
I know that I am the cause of them not being here today.
These playgrounds for "innocent children" now dead because of sins I helped do.
I hope, Lord, that the wonderful playground is well guarded with angels.
Angels who will protect them keep them happy and safe.
Angels who will make them smile and laugh.
So that when that glorious day comes; the children will not hold "the sin" against me.
For every time I see a playground empty, I will know that yours will be full.
The sun is now setting, and my heart hurts, Lord.
For the numbers who from abortion have been torn apart.
I pray you can put them back together and make them whole.
If you like, Lord, use my body to make your precious children whole again.
I ask you to do this not only for them, Lord, but also for the love I have for each of them.
Lord, God, you gave your only Son, and He died and shed His blood for us.
All I did was give my baby away so that "women could tear theirs apart."
For this I will never be able to look in your face out of shame.

However clever, Alito's ambiguity on abortion harms the nation
How did we get to the place where one side in a great national debate has the right to be open about its position while the other side is expected not just to be circumspect but altogether silent? Even from a nonpartisan point of view- indeed, maybe especially if you aren't sure what to think about the subject of abortio- it's a very bad approach to a much-needed national effort to resolve the matter.
Wouldn't it have been far better, for example, for the whole nation to hear a robust discussion of some of the related issues? Wouldn't we have been better served to hear Mr. Alito's deepest thoughts on the matter? As it was, both supporters and opponents have engaged in weeks of pretense. Even with Republicans in charge, the nominee was virtually told that unless he skated right to the edge of outright lies, his opponents on the committee could be counted on to carve a big hole in the ice and sink him for good.

on National Sanctity of Human Life Day 2006
Alexa swing by at 1:53 PM
The 33rd annual March for Life begins at noon, Monday, January 23, 2006; President Bush is invited; Members of Congress to speak
"President Bush is invited,"said Nellie Gray, President, March for Life Fund
. "We pledge support to stop this home-grown terrorism of persons and public and private officials participating in the intentional killing of an estimated 4,000 preborn humans each day."
It is expected that some Members of Congress and others will speak at the Rally, including: Senator Sam Brownback, and Representatives Christopher H. Smith (R-NJ), Jeff Fortenbury, (R-NE), W. Todd Akin (R-MO), Todd Tiahart (R-KS), Steve Chabot (R-OH), Melissa Hart (R-PA), Mike Pence (R-IN), Steve King (R-IA), Mike Fergerson (R-NJ), Scott Garrett (R-NJ), and Jeanne Schmidt (R-OH).
The theme of this 33rd annual March for Life is: Roe v. Wade Violates the American Way.
"The State or a Person Can Never Justify the Intentional Killing of an Innocent Born or Preborn Human in Existence at Fertilization. No Exception! No Compromise! We are calling for Americans to unify on goals and strategies to overturn Roe v. Wade, and replace it with the Life Principles. This means providing Constitutional protection for the unalienable right to life of each preborn and born human in existence at fertilization. Murder is not a feminist/abortionist's right of 'privacy.'
"Yet, tragically, each American lives side-by-side with the slaughter of an estimated 4,000 preborns each day who are not even buried in graves. And, America suffers the massacre of an estimated 48,000,000 preborn humans and their children's children due to Roe v. Wade. Feminists/abortionists cover up this horror and shame of innocent blood, clearly showing that abortion can never be respectable. Therefore, it is the responsibility of our federal government - not individual states - to provide for the general welfare and stop the intentional killing of even one innocent born or preborn human in our country. No Exception! No Compromise!"

In written responses to questions submitted by six Senate Democrats, Judge Alito refused to delve into several abortion-related issues, including the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision establishing abortion rights.
"Because Roe concerns issues that may well come before the Supreme Court, it would be inappropriate for me to comment directly on it," he wrote.

both Roberts and Alito are products of a Catholic intellectual life that has flowered in the years since the Court imposed legalized abortion on the nation. Compelled to moral seriousness by the urgency of the pro-life cause and granted a surprising public prominence by the collapse of the old Protestant mainline, post-ethnic Catholic thinkers have formed an exciting and powerful rhetoric in which to talk about public affairs in a modern democracy. You can see it among an increasing number of professors and journalists. You can see it, perhaps most of all, among lawyers and judges. You can even see it among nominees to the Supreme Court.

Here's an update on the Haleigh Poutre case..
The Supreme Court has ruled that the state can remove Haleigh from life support
11-year-old Haleigh was hospitalized in September after her stepfather and adoptive mother allegedly kicked her and beat her nearly to death with a baseball bat. Her stepfather, Jason Strickland, asked the Supreme Judicial Court last month to block the state from taking her off life support. Obviously he realized he could face a murder charge for taking part in the beating that left her comatose should she die.

Whistleblowers tell their horrible abortion stories
I am no longer grateful for Dr. Tiller "helping me". He didn't help me at all. I wish now I would [have] had the courage to deliver my little girl and let her get even just one breath of air before she passed, to let her see my face just once before she passed. I will never have that chance now and I will always have to live with the decision I made and the nightmares of what happened to me in Kansas. All I have now is my little 6 lb. 2 oz. daughter's ashes in a tiny silver engraved box in my living room. I have a small box of pictures and footprints and a receiving blanket with green goop on it that I can't bring myself to wash because I think it will wash her away. I still cry every day and I miss her everyday. Dr. Tiller didn't help me. He robbed me and I let him. Women need to know what goes on there. People need to be educated on what goes on inside his clinic.

An increasing number of young women under 18 are having abortions
"There is no choice involved. Many of the young women have to do it because they cannot carry their pregnancy to term," he said. "They are 17 or 18 and have not yet finished high school. Many don't want their families to know they are pregnant and so face the problem alone. Abortion has a serious impact on their health and psyche and can lead to social ills."
In Ho Chi Minh City, where many young women choose to have abortions, a doctor wrote...telling the story of a 13-year-old girl who was in her 10th week of pregnancy and on whom she performed an abortion.
She also related the story of a 19-year-old woman whose pregnancy was well-advanced. "She chose to end her pregnancy and the physicians performed the abortion using the "early birth" method. When she saw the dead baby, the young woman panicked. This was five years ago and she is still traumatised by the experience and doctors believe she'll suffer from hysteria for the rest of her life."

The figures do not take into account those girls who obtained the pills independently from pharmacists.

To know what's at stake in the Supreme Court confirmation hearings, it's best to travel 1,200 miles west from the paneled Senate room to a small nondescript clinic in a Great Plains state.
It's best to turn from the blue-and-white charts brandished by senators to the parking lot filled with cars from places as far away as Rapid City or even Wyoming. It's best to turn from the buzz about precedents and privacy to the quiet of a waiting room.
Here, late in the afternoon, the clinic is still full. There's a soldier who will make a 700-mile round trip from the western part of the state. There's a teenager slouching beside a tense mother. There's a rancher, a mother of two high-schoolers and pregnant after having an IUD removed.
This is the only clinic in the state and this is the only day in the week when a woman can get an abortion in South Dakota. Today, they'll be treated by one of four doctors flown in from Minneapolis because it's impossible to recruit locally. Today's doctor is Miriam McCreary, a mother of four and grandmother of nine, who graduated from medical school in 1958. At 70, she still knows "how desperate women are to end their pregnancies."
One clinic, one day, one doctor. This is what it's like in South Dakota right now under Roe v. Wade.

In an old Our Bodies, Ourselves I saw a photo of a woman holding a placard reading "Menstruation Is Murder." As a teenager, I couldn't begin to fathom the meaning of such extremism, but now it's clear her motto is the natural extrapolation of anti-choice logic. On the other hand, the socialists at my alma mater had Day-Glo stickers proclaiming "I F*** to Come, Not to Conceive." I found those too bold, perhaps because many of us who f*** for pleasure, our own and our partners', will also be those who f*** to conceive some day. People have sex for many reasons - pleasure, boredom, curiosity, peer pressure, and, yes, baby-making. It's presumptuous, condescending, and infuriating to be told what my reasons should be.

Bay Area abortion advocates destroy pro-life ads on SFO BART system
The ads, created by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and sponsored by Catholic Diocese of Oakland, criticize the Roe v. Wade decision and ask, "Abortion: Have we gone too far?"
begin appearing on 280 BART trains and in 48 BART stations on the day after Christmas and the Respect Life Ministry of the Oakland Diocese paid just over $43,000 for the ads. They are scheduled to run through the end of January.
"I think every woman has noticed them," said Suzanne "Sam" Joi, a member of Code Pink, a social justice and anti-war group. "I couldn't believe BART would allow something like this. Why are they doing this?"
"The defacement has taken to religious epithets, profanity, everything you can think of," said Monika Rodman. She told the Chronicle about how abortion advocates have torn down many signs, defaced them or put pro-abortion stickers across them.
Rodman said so many of the signs have been destroyed that they have used all of the extras they had replacing them and have had to place another order with their printer.
"Because of Roe vs. Wade, this is the amount of time the Supreme Court says it's legal to have an abortion."

Utah bill would require teenage girls to get approval from a parent before an abortion
Rep. Kerry Gibson, a freshman lawmaker from Ogden, says he was inspired by his ten-year-old daughter to sponsor the bill, known as HB 85. Currently, Utah law requires parental notification, but not consent, prior to a minor's abortion.
The Utah law would make exceptions for minors who fear their parents would abuse them if their pregnancies are discovered or if they are pregnant as a result of incest. An exception would also be made if a "medical condition exists that poses a significant threat of harm to the life or health of the minor."
Twenty-eight Republican House members have signed on as cosponsors for the legislation. "This is a parental rights issue. I'm responsible for anything my child does underage... It's critical parents give their consent to this," Gibson told the Salt Lake Tribune.
Planned Parenthood opposes the bill, calling it government interference in the family.

Well things didn't go quite as planned because I had to be in the hospital for a bit today. It didn't rain like always (it was sunny the whole morning, surprise, surprise!) so I took the boy swimming with Ken in the morning. The boys met and made friends quickly with a cute Japanese kid at the pool. In spite of the language barrier, Emily and I made plans with the mom, Saito-san, to get together again soon. We had lunch with my mom after that and then Em took them shopping (I can only imagine!) while I head for the hospital. Chad and Jules sent a package each, and Teddy called to send his love and to expect a huge box of 'something' in the next couple of days. Hmm. Grams brought chocolate cake, ice cream and homemade grandma chicken curry for dinner. The boy got one of those cozy coupe cars. I ate till I'm bloated. Heh.

NARAL: Alito does not refute his opposition to Roe v. Wade
"Under the first round of questions from Senator Specter, Samuel Alito did not refute his record of opposition to Roe v. Wade . He did not state whether he believes that the right to privacy includes a woman's right to choose. He did acknowledge that his 1985 statement, which said he believes legally that the Constitution does not protect a right to an abortion, was accurate. At this early stage in the hearings, Alito is stealing a page from Clarence Thomas' playbook. Thomas said the constitution included a right to privacy, then he voted to overturn Roe v. Wade one year later. Thus far, Alito has failed to give the American public any assurances that he would protect a woman's right to choose."

Judge Alito says he would deal with the issue of abortion with an open mind
Answering his first series of questions Tuesday, President Bush's nominee said the Constitution protects the right to privacy and the court in general should follow its earlier decisions rather than be moved by public opinion in controversial issues such as abortion.
"The legitimacy of the court is undermined if it makes its decision based on public perception," Alito told the Senate Judiciary Committee on the second day of his confirmation hearings.
"The presumption is the court will follow its prior precedents," Alito said when questioned about the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that legalized abortion. Courts should "not sway in the wind of public opinion at any time" and that doing so would undermine the legitimacy of the judicial system, Alito said.

Pope Benedict attacks the 'culture of death'
"We can say," the pontiff said, "that also in our own time it is necessary to say 'no' to a culture largely dominated by death; an anti-culture which shows itself, for example, in drugs, in escape from reality, in illusion, and in the false happiness that is expressed in lies, fraud, injustice, and contempt for others, for solidarity, and for responsibility towards the poor and the suffering."
This culture of death, the pope added, "is expressed in a sexuality which becomes pure enjoyment without responsibility, which makes man a mere object, no longer a person but a commodity."
"To this seeming promise of happiness," he stressed, "to this apparent life which in reality is no more than an instrument of death, to this anti-culture, we say 'no' in order to cultivate the culture of life. Baptism today is a great 'yes' to life, a 'yes' to Christ, a 'yes' to the one who conquered death."

Tom at Truth and Action
has an update on the Scott Thomas situation
Today was the long-anticipated status hearing on guardianship for Scott. The hearing took place in judge's chambers with Pamela and her attorneys and Eliza and her attorneys. Pamela's attorneys presented the court with information that she has now filed with the court to have Scott declare "partially capacitated". This means, at the very least, that he would then be allowed to indicate his preferences for his social environment, such as who is allowed to visit. He has repeatedly indicated that he does not want to see Eliza, but he does wants to see his son. The court was also informed that, after Scott is legally determined to be "partially capacitated", they would be filing for a divorce. The final item that was presented to the judge is that Scott is scheduled for surgery to close his tracheotomy opening, which should allow him to regain his ability to speak and make sound.
Based on all the above information, Judge Wilkes ruled to grant Pamela another six months of full guardianship of Scott. This will be a crucial time for Pamela and Scott, as they continue to work, not only for Scott's recovery, but for him to regain the right and ability to truly "speak for himself".

In another time, with a different president, under slightly changed circumstances, Judge Samuel Alito might make a fine addition to the U.S. Supreme Court. But there is too much at stake for him to be confirmed now.
Even before Senate hearings start Monday, it's clear that Alito is a decent, honorable person and a distinguished legal thinker. But it is impossible to imagine that he can say anything in the hearings that would remove the concerns created by the clear record of his legal philosophy. He is a brilliant ideologue whose presence on the court would make much of the nation ache for the very justice he would replace, the court's great reconciler of differences, Sandra Day O'Connor.
Time isn't right for Alito confirmation, according to the Seattle Post Intelligencer

10 million female fetuses have been aborted in India over the last two decades
, a study of birth rates by British medical journal Lancet reveals
Fewer daughters have been born to couples who have not yet had a boy, according to the study, which was led by Dr. Prabhat Jha, director of the Centre for Global Health Research at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto.
The journal said researchers studied data on female fertility from a continuing Indian national survey of 6 million people in 11 million households.
Analyzing information about 133,738 births, the researchers found that the deficit in the number of girls born as second children was more than twice as great among educated mothers than among illiterate ones, the report said.
Based on the natural gender ratio from other countries, they estimated that 136 million to 138 million girls should have been born in 1997 in India. However, 131 million were reported, the Lancet said.
"We conservatively estimate that prenatal sex determination and selective abortion accounts for 0.5 million missing girls yearly," Jha wrote in the study report.
"If this practice has been common for most of the past two decades since access to ultrasound became widespread, then a figure of 10 million missing female births would not be unreasonable."

Making abortion illegal in Indiana..
The bill by Representative Troy Woodruff of Vincennes would change Indiana's feticide law to make it a Class C felony to perform an abortion. The only exception would be when a pregnancy threatens the life or health of the mother. Violating the law would carry a 2- to 8-year prison sentence.
Woodruff says he filed the bill Wednesday in part because the makeup of the US Supreme Court has changed and a state must pass a law and then appeal it to the highest court to see if the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling stands.

AA's guest blogger Megan
shares her story..
In the wildest of my card-carrying liberal imaginations, however, I never dreamed I would actually have to follow through on our agreement. Before the diagnosis, I believed I should allow people to make their own choices and never judge them for what they believed they needed to do. I just knew my baby would be perfect, and I would never be faced with a difficult choice. Of course, my baby was wondrously made. I didn't want to give him up to die, but I abandoned a mother's love and stood by my word: an agreement is an agreement, I thought.
Caught in the confusion of an unexpected turn of events, I had to decide how to free my son from suffering. I made the wrong choice. Knowing the decision was ultimately mine is the hardest part of all. I remember clearly the impulse to run at the start of the abortion procedure. I even whispered, "No." But I stayed on the table. No one strapped me there, and the world was reduced to me and my son. I abandoned him.
As I lay on the abortion table a few days after my baby's diagnosis, I surprisingly screamed out from the depths of my soul, "God, help me. Please help me." I had stopped calling on God years before.

An unborn child who became hockey star stopped his mother from taking her life-- with a small kick
Justin Pogge, star goalie for the Canadian junior men's hockey team, and newly signed to the Toronto Maple Leafs made a move 19 years ago that stopped his mother from throwing herself off a bridge into the river in Fort McMurray, Alta.
Annet Pogge was 22 when her boyfriend walked out on her at their engagement party, after she told him she was four months pregnant. After dealing with 126 confused guests, she walked onto the bridge that night and thought about ending her life.
"Just when I was thinking of doing it," she told the Globe and Mail last week, "when I was thinking of terminating everything, not just the pregnancy, but me, I felt a kick. It was light but I felt it."
That tiny motion of her baby shocked her out of her despair.
"It was the first real sign of life," she said. "I remember thinking, 'Oh, my God. This is a sign. God wants me to live.' I couldn't end my life then. I couldn't."

EU challenges Vatican's draft abortion treaty
The treaty between Slovakia and the Vatican would have restricted sensitive medical treatment such as abortions and IVF. It would allow healthcare workers in hospitals founded by the Catholic church to refuse to perform abortions or carry out fertility treatment on "conscience" grounds if they believe such work conflicts with their faith.
Their concerns were backed by the EU group. It said "certain religious organisations" should have the right not to perform "certain activities where this would conflict with [their] ethos or belief". But it added: "It is important the exercise of this right does not conflict with the rights of others, including the right of all women to receive certain medical services or counselling without any discrimination."

exposed Planned Parenthood's true agenda
Sedlak says that one of the surprises in this year's survey was the growing number of Planned Parenthood "express clinics." Planned Parenthood websites describe these facilities by stating, "At an express health center, clients who are short on time and do not require a table examination can quickly pick up their birth control medication or get contraceptive advice."
"It appears that these express clinics serve as storefront operations where Planned Parenthood can sell its most profitable items with the least amount of overhead," said Sedlak. "Our research shows that Planned Parenthood sells a monthly supply of birth control pills for anywhere from $16 to $25, but pays just $1.50 for them. That's killer profit.
Hmph. I find the whole idea of these "express clinics" truly fascinating. Clearly Planned Parenthood have women's best interests at heart.. ahh...

Abortion cause severe depression
, says new New Zealand study
The New Zealand study found that having an abortion as a young woman raises the risk of developing mental health problems such as depression and anxiety.
The findings come from the Christchurch Health and Development Study of 1265 children tracked since their birth in the 1970s.
Some 41% of the more than 500 women in the study became pregnant by the age of 25 and 90 women had abortions.
Some 42% of the women who had abortions had experienced major depression within the last four years. That's almost double the rate of women who never became pregnant. The risk of anxiety disorders also doubled.
According to the study, women who have abortions were twice as likely to drink alcohol at dangerous levels and three times as likely to be addicted to illegal drugs.
David Fergusson, who led the study, said the results show access to legal abortions is not necessarily good for women. He also said the study confirms abortions cause women mental health issue -- rather than alleviating them as abortion advocates claim.
