On this day a year ago, the world watched with sadness and alarm as
Terri Schindler-Schiavo began a long, painful and barbaric process of a court-sanctioned execution by starvation when her feeding tube, which provided her nutrition and hydration, was removed by her husband, Michael. Despite our protests, we watched helplessly as her life ended thirteen days later. Terri's death was a dramatic wake-up call to the rest of us. It made us stop and reflect on the God given intrinsic dignity and value of each human life.
Today we remember Terri. We remember that she was
somebody's daughter, sister and friend. And as we move forward to confront the culture of death, we remember that all lives are precious and should be protected, respected and loved, regardless of their capabilities.
